New parents are over the moon
"We are overwhelmed with happiness and joy at this very special moment," US Weekly quoted the proud papas as saying in a statement. "Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents."

The birth of Zachary comes a year after the gay couple tried to adopt an AIDS-infected 14-month-old orphan in Ukraine, but their attempt was thwarted by that country’s government.

This is the first child for John and Furnish, who exchanged vows in a civil ceremony in 2005.

About the new dads’ union
John and his Canadian-born partner David Furnish, a former advertising executive and now film maker, met in 1993 for the first time, and are together since then.

In Feburary this year, the Rocket Man singer told Parade magazine in an interview that he and his long-term partner David had an instant connection when they met in 1993.

"I was attracted to David immediately. He was very well dressed, very shy. The next night we had dinner. After it, we consummated our relationship. We fell in love very quickly," John told the magazine at the time. "Every Saturday for 16 years, we've sent each other a card, no matter where we are in the world, to say how much we love each other."

The gay couple’s civil partnership in Windsor Guildhall took place on the day same-sex unions became legal in 2005.

Sir Elton John was previously married to a woman for four years before he and his wife divorced in 1988.
