Taylor Swift targets ex-boyfriends, critics through music

Talking about individual songs, Swift has carefully aimed them at particular people, and she minces no words in revealing which song is for whom.

Taylor Swift will not speak about her personal life, she believes in just singing it out aloud. Her music is about her life, says the country singer, and all the men who have ever dated her are bound to be mentioned in her songs.

Joe Jonas, Taylor Lautner and singer John Mayer obviously gave her plenty to write about. She targets them all in her new album ‘Speak Now,’ which will hit the shelves on Monday, Oct. 25.

Each song dedicated to someone
Each song on the album is “a different confession to a different person,” said the singer, whose Grammy-winning album ‘Fearless’ was the biggest selling record of 2009.

Talking about her upcoming album to MTV News, Swift said, “It sort of is what it is. I've had this formula for a long time that I've kind of applied to my music.”

The only way I know how to understand pain or move past it is to write songs about it.– Taylor Swift

Swift’s hit making formula?
So what is the formula that makes her music work? Swift says it is the honesty that comes across in her music. She just writes the way she feels, be it pain or pleasure, and that is what defines her.

“If I continue to write music about my life and my life is always changing, then my music is always changing,” said the 20-year-old singer.

“The only way I know how to understand pain or move past it is to write songs about it — if I change that, I'm really more changing a part of who I am. And I don't really want to start doing that.”

When things really get tough, sometimes “it takes writing a song to get over them,” she says.

Swift’s targets
Talking about individual songs, Swift has carefully aimed them at particular people, and she minces no words in revealing which song is for whom.

‘Dear John’ is thought to be about 33-year-old John Mayer, with whom she had a brief relationship. Don't you think nineteen's too young/To be played/By your dark, twisted games/When I loved you so…go the lyrics.

Talking to People magazine, Swift almost clearly declared the song was about Mayer. “A lot of times when people's relationships end, they write an e-mail to that person and say everything that they wish they would have said. A lot of times they don't push send.”

“This was a tough one to write,” she said, “and I guess putting it on the album was pushing send.”

Another track, ‘Back to December’ is thought to be dedicated to Taylor Lautner, who dated Swift in late 2009. “This is about a person who was incredible to me -- just perfect to me in a relationship -- and I was really careless with him,” she said.

Kanye, critics all get aimed
‘Better Than Revenge’ is believed to be targeted at Joe Jonas, while ‘Mean’ is seen as her response to her critics. Swift also addressed the famous Kanye West controversy by singing ‘Innocent’ in front of him at the September MTV show.

Past relationships have given her a lot of inspiration for her music, but the presently-single Swift is in no rush to get paired again. “Being single is wonderful and I love it,” she says. “I don't ever have a morning where I wake up and say, 'I really need to find a boyfriend today.'”
