Skinny woman eats 181 wings to become eating champ

Thomas nicknamed herself the ‘Black Widow’ because she has defeated a string of male competitors in past competitive eating events.

National speed-eating champion has been crowned in Buffalo, New York, on Sunday. The title went to a skinny woman from Virginia after she downed 181 wings, or 4.86 pounds, in 12 minutes.

Sonya 'The Black Widow' Thomas gobbled down the record number of chicken wings at the annual National Buffalo Wing Eating Festival on Sunday, according to media reports.

Skinny VA woman is eating champ
Thomas, who is 5 feet tall and 105 pounds, set a world record in winning the wing-eating competition Sunday for the fourth year in a row by downing 2.2Kg of spicy chicken in 12 minutes.

"This is probably the biggest eating contest in the world other than the Nathan's hot dog eating contest. The number one eater in the world, Joey Chestnut, went up against Sonya Thomas -- a mismatch in size but not a mismatch in competitive eating talent and heart and Sonya Thomas beat Joey Chestnut," WKBW News reported festival organizer Drew Cerza as saying. "She set a world record with 181 chicken wings."

According to The Associated Press, Cerza said Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., and Chestnut, of San Jose, Calif., went "neck and neck" at the competition.

Thomas dethrones marathon wing eater
At the final day of the 2010 National Buffalo Wing Festival, the 43-year-old clinched the title from the reigning champ Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut, who was able to eat 169 wings or 4.55 pounds.

Joey, who is 6 ft 2 inch and weighs 230lb, is the winner of the last four Nathan's Hot Dog Eating competitions at Coney Island, New York.

"I'm savoring this victory, because finishing ahead of Joey in any food may never happen again," CNN quoted Thomas as saying. "Before today it had been well over two years since I earned a victory over him."

Eating champ used more fingers than mouth
According to The Associated Press, Cerza said Thomas, of Alexandria, Va., and Chestnut, of San Jose, Calif., went "neck and neck" at the competition.

"They pushed each other really hard. Joey is so strong. He's got great jaw strength. But Sonya's so fast with the hand," Cerza said.

Also Thomas attributed her Sunday’s triumph to her fancy finger work, reports AP.

"Sometimes if I try to chew too much I slow down," she said. "I used my hands more than the mouth."

'Black Widow' vs 'Jaws'
Thomas nicknamed herself the ‘Black Widow’ because she has defeated a string of male competitors in past competitive eating events.

She won her first competitive eating event in 2003, and subsequently set eating records for oysters, hard-boiled eggs, cheesecake and jalapeno peppers. Thomas set the previous wings-eating record in 2005, when she ate 174 wings.

After the Sunday’s award ceremony, Thomas was still hungry and didn’t think twice before eating 20 chicken wings more.

Chestnut, on the other hand, is more of a marathon wing eater. In 2007, he ate 66 hot dogs in 12 minutes to win Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest at Coney Island.

He repeated the act at the Coney Island hot dog champ in 2008 (tying six-time champ Takeru Kobayashi with 59 dogs in 10 minutes, then downing five more in a tiebreaker), in 2009 (68 dogs), and in 2010 (54 dogs). He holds the 30-minute record after consuming 241 wings in 2008.
