It was not immediately clear what sparked the brawl between the two men, but it’s being reported that the notoriously volatile closer was visibly angry upon entering the clubhouse after the team's game loss.
Apparently frustrated by team's 6-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies, Mets closer Francisco Rodriguez got into an altercation with a man believed to be his father-in-law, according to several published reports.
Rodriguez, nicknamed K-Rod, allegedly clashed with the 53-year-old man in a tunnel just outside the Mets clubhouse moments after his team lost its game to the Rockies at Citi Field, the reports say.
Rodriguez’s alleged altercation with wife’s dad
According to New York Post, the 28-year-old was arrested after allegedly being involved in a physical altercation with his father-in-law last night.
Rodriguez’s wife’s father, whose name was withheld, suffered facial abrasions and a head bump and was rushed by ambulance to Flushing Hospital shortly after the altercation.
A former All-Star, Rodriguez reportedly was in a rotten mood because Met manager Jerry Manuel opted not to use him for a four-out save after his bullpen cost the team another game in the eighth inning, and went with Manny Acosta instead.
Arrested for assault
The Venezuela-born star closer was taken into custody at Citi Field and was charged with third-degree assault, reports Boston Herald, citing Lt. Mike Wysokowski.
"He was arrested at 10:15 after a domestic dispute in the family area with what appeared to be his father-in-law," Wysokowski said. "The victim suffered facial abrasions and was taken to Flushing Hospital."
What irritated the star closer?

When approached at his locker room by reporters asking why he was not summoned to pitch in a bases loaded situation in the eighth inning, an irate Rodriguez replied, "Did I f— pitch? Then why do I gotta talk to you guys, then?"
As Rodriguez left the clubhouse, another reporter approached him seeking explanation for the brawl, he snarled, "Mind your own f-----g business."
Closer’s past dust ups
Rodriguez, who has twins daughter, Angelina and son Francisco Jr.- with his wife, is known for wildly emotional antics.
This isn't the first time Rodriguez has lost his cool, instead it is just one of several dust ups he's had recently.
In May, Rodriguez got into a heated argument with Mets bullpen coach Randy Niemann during warm-up sessions before coming into the Subway Series.
Last season, he got into a heated exchange on a team bus with former Mets executive Tony Bernazard. There also was a reported incident with former Yankee reliever Brian Bruney.
K-Rod on the field
So far this year on the field, K-Rod is 4-2 with 25 saves in 30 opportunities and a 2.24 ERA (earned-run average) for the Mets.
Rodriguez signed a three-year, $37 million contract with the Mets after posting a record 62 saves with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2008. K-Rod has been named to the All-Star team four times.
