Dell’s Streak to hit shelves this week

The Dell Streak will be up for pre-order in the United States on August 12 with two price tag options; $299.99 with new two-year service contract with AT&T and $549.99 for complete carrier freedom.

Dell Inc. is all set to challenge the supremacy of to Apple Inc.'s iPad.

The Round Rock, Texas, based behemoth’s sortie into the Android tablet market is scheduled to commence later this week when its tablet, Streak, would be launched in the United States.

Orders for the touch-screen device will open up for U.S. priority pre-sale registrants at www.dell.com/mobile this Thursday, Aug. 12. General availability of the gadget will commence a day later at www.dell.com/mobile.

Two price points
Customers who have already purchased Streak and have signed up during the pre-sale program will be given a free second-day shipping upgrade, according to the press release given by the company.

Available for $299.99 with a two-year AT&T contract, the carbon black Android-based tablet promises to provide an excellent "on-the-go" entertainment, social association and navigation experience.

The gadgets web-browsing capabilities are being pegged as good as those of a laptop. Sans the two-year AT&T contract, Streak comes with a price tag of $549.99.

Features galore
Unveiled in May and being marketed as a tablet, this device which boasts of a five-inch WVGA TFT LCD 'Gorilla' glass screen, is also capable of making phone calls.

In that regard, it is really more like a large smartphone and has the capability to offer tough competition to Evo 4G and the Droid X.

The company has described Streak, once dubbed the Dell Mini 5, as hitting the "sweet spot" between smartphones and tablets with larger screens.

"The Dell Streak has found a way to fit your whole world in a 5-inch screen.
Its unique size will help people discover new ways to enjoy the web, connect with friends, and navigate their lives," said Ron Garriques, president, Dell Communication Solutions.

Additionally, Streak has built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a fast 1-GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The 3G connectivity through HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access) networks will enable handling e-mail, texting, instant messages, and voice calls.

What’s more, Streak has been so designed to support future software, application and platform upgrades.

The Dell Streak has already been launched in the United Kingdom with O2.
