Known for her eccentric dress-up and style, Lady Gaga has inspired glam rock musicians around the globe in just a short span of two years.
Lady Gaga’s latest music video ‘Telephone,’ featuring Beyonce, has been called a “true pop event.” The video, released by E! News on March 11, reached a 16 million viewership in just 4 days!
Shot for Gaga’s album ‘The Fame Monster,’ the video is approximately of nine and a half minute duration.
The video is a continuation of Gaga’s previous music video “Paparazzi” in which the singer is arrested for poisoning her boyfriend and taken to jail.
It has been heavily influenced by movies like “Thelma & Louise” and “Kill Bill.”
Gaga’s ‘Telephone’
With the new video, both Gaga and Beyonce have proved that they are not the usual cookie cutter artists.
The video starts in a female prison, called “Prison for Bitches.” Gaga is a cellmate in the same, with no clothing in the beginning.
Throughout the video there are a lot of advertisements for brands like Diet Coke, Wonder Bread, Honey Bun, Virgin Mobile, Coors Light and Gaga’s Heartbeats headphones.
However, Gaga’s manager Troy Carter said that the only paid advertisements were www.PlentyofFish.com and Miracle Whip.
Gaga explained the main theme of the video in an interview to AMP Radio. She said, “The hallmarking of mayonnaise and Wonder Bread and the American flag is to make a metaphor with the telephone, and how we’re inundated with products and technology.
“The whole sentiment of me making a sandwich then having everyone vomit up their food and die, is supposed to be a joke about how we feel with the Internet, movies, advertisements, telephones, cell phones and the media; and how we need to purge ourselves of all of those things, hence the American flag outfits Beyonce and I have on.”
She added that the whole video was just made for her fans to “feel more free.”
Video's director speaks up
The director for the video Jonas Akerlund talked to MTV News about how he had planned for the video.
“On my very ambitious shooting schedule, there was actually a few scenes we never got to. I'm very time optimistic, and I always try to squeeze in as much as I can,” he said.
He added that the video was shot in just two days.
“Story-wise, when we were in the edit, I didn't look back and feel like we were missing anything. I'm kind of cool with what we got, but there was a few things.
“We had a little scene when they got to the diner and they have a little dialogue before they go in. And also after they kill all the people in the diner, we had another scene where they're running to the car taking off. It was just a bunch of scenes that we never got to,” he further said.
