Kate Winslet’s marriage hits an iceberg; splits from hubby

In a statement Monday, the law firm announced that the 'Titanic' star Winslet and 'American Beauty' director Mendes, who live in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, are ending their marriage after almost seven years together.

Oscar-winner Kate Winslet and her director-husband Sam Mendes have parted ways after nearly seven years of union. Citing a U.K. law firm, multiple tabloids are reporting that the celebrity couple have amicably separated.

The Oscar-winning couple, who wed in a beach ceremony in 2003, reportedly split earlier this year, but the London-based law firm, Schillings, only released a statement Monday announcing the pending divorce, according to ABC News.

Winslet and Mendes separating
In a statement Monday, the law firm announced that the ‘Titanic’ star Winslet and ‘American Beauty’ director Mendes, who live in New York's Chelsea neighborhood, are ending their marriage after almost seven years together.

Keith Schilling, of the legal firm Schillings, said in a statement, “Kate and Sam are saddened to announce that they separated earlier this year. The split is entirely amicable and is by mutual agreement. Both parties are fully committed to the future joint parenting of their children.”

“They ask that the media respect the privacy of the family," the statement added.

The 34-year-old screen star Winslet met stage and screen director Mendes, 44, in 2001 when he tried to cast her in a play.

Born on Oct. 5, 1975 in Reading, England as Kate Elizabeth Winslet, the actress is noted for having played a wide range of diverse characters over her career, but is probably best-known for her critically acclaimed performance as Juliet Hulme in ‘Heavenly Creatures’ (1994), Rose DeWitt Bukater in the 1997 shipwreck blockbuster, ‘Titanic’ and Clementine Kruczynski in ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ (2004).

Winslet, who earned an Oscar nomination for ‘Little Children’ in 2006, is also the winner of British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). She also won the Academy Award in 2009 for her role in ‘The Reader’.

In addition, she was awarded a Critics Choice, BAFTA, Screen Actors Guild and Golden Globe for her role in ‘The Reader’.

The 34-year-old screen star Winslet met stage and screen director Mendes, 44, in 2001 when he tried to cast her in a play. The two went public with their relationship in November 2001 and two years later tied the knot in a private ceremony in the Caribbean.

The couple has one child together, six-year-old son, Joe Alfie Winslet Mendes. Winslet also has a nine-year-old daughter Mia Honey from her first marriage to director Jim Threapleton. She and Threapleton split in 2001 after three years of marriage.

Winslet thankful to hubby
Mendes directed Winslet in the 2008 movie ‘Revolutionary Road’, which earned her Golden Globe and also reunited her with ‘Titanic’ co-star, Leonardo DiCaprio.

The couple’s split-up news comes days after a Winslet’s interview in which she praised her hubby and his fatherhood, according to New York Daily News.

"My husband is so brilliant, and he is an excellent dad," Daily quoted Winslet as saying in a recent interview. "He is quite domesticated. I've got him trained."

Upon winning a Golden Globe for her role in ‘Revolutionary Road’, the actress thanked Mendes, whom she affectionately called "babe."

"Thank you for directing this film, babe, and thank you for killing us every single day and really enjoying us actually being in such horrific pain," she said.
