Corey's grieving mother said she received an early courtesy call from the Coroner’s Office who told her that the autopsy conducted yesterday found her son had an enlarged heart and his lungs were filled with water.
Corey Haim, who recently died at the age of 38, suffered pulmonary congestion, the actor’s mother confirmed to Access Hollywood.
Corey's autopsy was completed Thursday, and his mother Judy Haim told Access the LA County coroner called her to disclose the actor’s cause of death.
Judy claimed that the autopsy found Corey died of pulmonary congestion and he also had an enlarged heart and water in the lungs at the time of his death.
Tragic loss
Eighties heart-throb Corey had reportedly been suffering flu-like symptoms in the days leading up to his sudden and untimely death. He was rushed to a Burbank hospital where he was pronounced dead Wednesday.
Citing the Coroner’s Office, Access reports that prescription bottles containing four different medications, including Valium, Vicodin and muscle relaxant Soma, were taken from his Burbank apartment, which he shared with his mom.
The actor’s mother and manager told the coroner’s office that those medications were the only ones he was taking. However, the coroner could not confirm if these were the only drugs found in his body.
Corey’s former fiancée, Tiffany Shepis, says "The Lost Boys" star had long suffered from heart problems and struggled with addiction
Autopsy completed but no official cause of death revealed
Corey’s autopsy was completed Thursday, but the official autopsy results have not been released by the L.A. Coroner’s Office.
L.A. Coroner Chief Craig Harvey confirmed to People magazine that the autopsy was completed at 11 a.m. Thursday, but said, "There is no final cause of death at this time."
"The final cause of death has been deferred pending additional tests that have been ordered," he told the magazine.
Actor was ill before his death
Shortly before his death on Wednesday, the actor was said to have had a high fever and was complaining of flu-like symptoms.
Corey’s manager Mark Heaslip told New York Daily News that the actor had been running a fever of 99 to 101 degrees and complained of shortness of breath shortly before he dropped to his knees in his bedroom and became unresponsive.
According to Usmagazine.com, Judy saw her son stumble, struggle to breathe and collapse before calling 911. He was then taken from his North Hollywood home by ambulance to Burbank's Providence St. Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Corey’s heart problems and addiction
Corey’s former fiancée, Tiffany Shepis, told People "The Lost Boys" star had long suffered from heart problems.
"Every time he would go to a doctor they'd tell him he had really bad arrhythmia, probably due to clogged arteries," Shepis, who was engaged to Haim briefly between 2008 and 2009, told the magazine. "They all said he should have it taken care of. But, being from Canada, his insurance was there, so he never went and got it done."
Shepis also said that the actor struggled with addiction. "His problem was with prescription drugs – painkillers and Valium," she said. "His addictions are common knowledge. And the longer [you] are addicted to something, the harder it is for you to quit. And that's what he was facing."
Corey cared for mom
NY Daily reports that Corey was helping his mom on her battle against breast cancer.
"He supported her all the way through the chemo and radiation. He surprised her with a really nice wig. He really took good care of her," Heaslip told the tabloid.
"She is very, very upset. They were extremely close," Heaslip said of Corey's grieving mother.
