Currently, Apple’s iPhone OS 3.1 offers very limited multi-tasking in the background like keeping a call active while user browse in Safari or listen to music while reading a book.
According to a report published on AppleInsider on Thursday, Apple (NSDQ: AAPL) Inc. is planning to bring multi-tasking for its iPhone platform this summer with its new iPhone 4.0 update.
Multi-tasking is the capability to run various apps simultaneously; it allows the user to switch between apps without a glitch, same way as allowed in Mac OS, Android and Palm WebOS etc.
AppleInsider mentioned that the information has arrived via “people with a proven track record” for providing trustworthy and accurate inside scoop on Apple’s latest technologies.
But the ‘accurate source’ failed to provide information on how Apple is planning to deliver the new functionality without affecting efficient memory usage, battery life or security. Many smartphones in the market support multi-tasking but the feature is known to affecting battery life and performance of the device.
Introduction of multi-tasking manager with update
It’s not that Apple’s iPhone OS 3.1 currently does not offer multi-tasking, but the company intentionally restricts third-party apps from running in the background on its devices.
"Apple plans to deliver a multitasking manager that leverages interface technology already bundled with its Mac OS X operating system," according to the sources of AppleInsider.
But the report suggests that Apple will be introducing a multi-tasking manager from Mac OS X in the updated version of iPhone OS 4.0 that will change everything by allowing third-party apps to run in the background.

However, reportedly the much-awaited OS is still in the early stages of its development and could take time before it’s finally ready for release.
Multi-tasking important for Apple devices?
According to Tim Bajarin, principal analyst for Creative Strategies, Apple might have finally realized the importance of providing this feature to survive in the competitive world of smartphones.
"Users have wanted multitasking on their iPhones for a long time and, given the competitive environment, it will be important for Apple to bring this type of functionality to the iPhone and the iPad in the future," said Bajarin.
Bajarin said that that Apple should eventually deliver the multi-tasking ability on its new device iPad too, so to make it “an even more powerful device.”
However, Michael Oh, president of Boston-based Apple reseller Tech Superpowers, holds the opinion that, "Apple doesn't really need multitasking for the iPhone to be competitive, but the perception is that competitors are going to be pushing multitasking as a feature.”
“The time is about right for Apple to cave on this -- unless there is radically new hardware, the iPhone feels like it is losing ground and staying still,” added Oh.
