Cisco unveils new routing system CRS-3

Cisco said the device will help Internet service providers (ISPs) and telecommunication companies. Already being used by AT&T in various field tests, the router has a price of $90,000.
Cisco System on Tuesday unveiled a high-speed routing system for the Internet which can download and transmit videos, photos, and documents at a rate three times higher than the current hardware.
John Chambers, Cisco’s chief executive, said the latest version is “a step that's really needed today. The Internet will scale faster than any of us anticipate.”
“What you see is enabling a new generation of collaboration,” said Chambers during a Web broadcast Tuesday morning. “The role of the Internet is changing forever. It will completely transform our work and how we interface with our family and others.”
Cisco’s new router
The new router called CRS-3 can download a book in just over a second and stream a movie in only four minutes. Cisco said the equipment is the main component of upgrading networks.
Having power of 322T bits per second, the CRS-3 router has “12 times (12Xs) the capacity of its nearest competitor.”

Cisco, the world's largest maker of computer networking equipment, has invested approximately $1.6 billion in the product.
“We want to watch TV shows on our mobile phone, to play online video games, to do videoconferencing,” said Zeus Kerravala, an analyst at research firm Yankee Group. “That’s all possible because Cisco continues to push the envelope.”
The killer app
The refrigerator-sized machine is made for mobile-video. Chambers called the video “the killer app” as it is 100 times faster than home connections.
“Ultra high-speed networks will ensure that the jobs and businesses of the future are created in America,” Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski said. “New technologies like Cisco’s and investments by broadband providers are important steps toward this goal.”

Cisco, the first company to get the Ron Brown Award (an award to honor companies for the relationships they keep with employees and community), has been one of the most valuable companies in the world, with a market capitalization of more than US$500 billion.
The company’s shares climbed up by 9 percent on Tuesday, the highest since June 2008.
