Farrah Fawcett forgotten at the Academy Awards Memoriam

Though the selections for the Oscar memoriam do face some trivial objections but Farrah Fawcett seemed to have, what it takes to qualify for that tribute

Farrah Fawcett’s death got her fans to pour out gallons of tears last June but the Academy Awards failed to acknowledge the actress’ loss on Sunday.

In the traditional ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the Oscars, which is a tribute to actors and filmmakers who passed away in course of the year, the Academy Awards surprisingly left out Farrah Fawcett.

The memoriam at the Oscars this year reminded viewers of some of the major losses that the industry has suffered over the year. They thought of Patrick Swayze, David Carradine and Michael Jackson, but strangely missed out on several big celebrities who lost their lives in 2009.

Fans question Farrah’s absence
The net-o-sphere has been abuzz with concerns about Farrah’s absence from the Academy Awards memoriam with many fans demanding an explanation. Film critic Roger Ebert was among the people who demanded a reason why a celebrity as prominent as Farrah was left out?

He called it a “major fail” on part of the Oscars’ authorities. “They have a whole lot of 'splaining to do,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

Farrah’s fame
Fawcett sprung to international fame when she played Jill Munroe in 1970s TV series Charlie's Angels. Fawcett had also acted in several critically-acclaimed movies and had won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

Fawcett was seen as a fashion icon, whose hair-style inspired a whole brigade of stylists and her poster sales broke records. She went down after a long battle with cancer and passed away in June 2009.

A celebrity of her repute should have deserved an honoring tribute at the Oscars. Though the selections for the Oscar memoriam do face some trivial objections but Farrah Fawcett seemed to have, what it takes to qualify for that accolade.

Missing from Oscar Memoriam
There were also some other eminent personalities who went missing from the Oscars’ memoriam segment.

Ed McMohan of ‘The Tonight Show’ and Henry Gibson, who starred in ‘The Blues Brothers’, ‘Bio-Dome’ were absent from the memoriam at the Academy Awards.

Also missing was Bea Arthur, who worked in films like ‘Lovers and Other Strangers’, ‘Mame’, ‘History of the World, Part I’ and was best known as Dorothy Zbornak on ‘Golden Girls’ died last year, at the age of 86.

Leslie Unger, a spokeswoman for Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences explained that it is not possible to include all celebrities in the memoriam. “Every year it's an unfortunate reality that we can't include everybody,” she said.
