‘Avatar’, ‘The Hurt Locker’, ‘Precious’ and ‘Inglorious Bastards’ are a few of the nominated movies in the best picture category.
The 82nd Academy Awards ceremony, to be held at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood on Sunday evening at 5 pm, is going to be a bundle of joy and sorrow for the Oscar nominees.
The Oscar ceremony will complete 66 years this season and for the first time the number of best picture nominees have been raised from five movies to ten flicks.
The host of the award ceremony will be the crazy and comical duo Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin, who were loved by the audience in ‘It’s Complicated’ where they played contenders to win the love of Meryl Streep.
The first female director
Contending for the best film category are some of the finest movies that broke many records.
‘Avatar’, ‘The Hurt Locker’, ‘Precious’ and ‘Inglorious Bastards’ are a few of the nominated movies in the best picture category.
Industry analysts are predicting that the Oscar for the best direction will fall in the kitty of James Cameron’s ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow for ‘The Hurt Locker’ and if this happens then Kathryn will become the first female director to win an Oscar.
But if she loses the gamble against ex-hubby’s ‘Avatar’ that broke the records of ‘Titanic’ to become the highest grosser movie ever made, then she will be the fourth female director to lose the award, the last being Sofia Coppola who was nominated for ‘Lost in Translation’ in 2003.
Another strong contender is Lee Daniels, director of ‘Precious’. If he wins the best director Oscar, then he will create history too by becoming the first black best director winner.
Smallest or biggest movie to win best picture award
‘The Hurt Locker’, a movie that earned only $12.6 million in domestic release, will become the smallest grosser film to win an Oscar if it bags the Academy award for best picture.
But if the award is taken away by ‘Avatar’ which earned more than 700 million dollars in domestic release, then it will be the biggest movie to win an Oscar in the history of the Academy awards.
Will Meryl Streep break her losing streak?
Hollywood actress, Meryl Streep has been nominated for an Oscar in the category of Best actress in a leading role for ‘Julie & Julia’ but following her closely is Sandra Bullock nominated for ‘The Blind Side’.
But if Meryl Streep wins, it will be her first Oscar in almost thirty years as she won her last Oscar in 1983.
And if she loses yet again then this will be her twelfth consecutive lose at the Academy awards, she will have lost 12 consecutive Oscars.
The 82nd Academy Awards will be aired live on ABC at 5 pm Sunday evening.
