Lee Daniels, won award for best director for 'Precious'. He said,"Kathryn Bigelow’s not here tonight. I am."
“Precious,” based on the novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire, bagged the best film award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards, held in Los Angeles on Friday.
The film about a pregnant African American teenager and her abusive mother also bagged four other awards.
Lee Daniels won the award for best director, Geoffrey Fletcher for best first screenplay, Gabourey Sidibe for best female lead, and Mo’Nique for best supporting female.
On accepting the award, Daniels said, “Kathryn Bigelow’s not here tonight. I am.”
Backstage, he said, “We've won already,” referring to the movie’s chance in Oscars where it is nominated in six categories.
Winners in other categories
Other winners at the awards included ‘An Education’ and ‘Anvil! The Story of Anvil’ for best foreign film and best documentary respectively. The best male lead actor went to Oscar nominee Jeff Bridges for his performance in ‘Crazy Heart.’
Bridges thanked the crowd and said, “Crazy Heart' is a gem of an independent film. It makes me weak in the knees, it's so dear to me. It's really a gem of an independent film, and you know what makes these gems shine, it's passion.”
Woody Harrelson won the Spirit award for supporting male for ‘The Messenger.’
Best Screenplay went to Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber for ‘(500) Days of Summer’ while Roger Deakins received the best cinematography award for ‘A Serious Man.’
Kyle Patrick Alvarez, director of ‘Easier With Practice’ received the Acura Someone to Watch Award while Bill and Turner Ross, directors of ‘45365,’ received the Chaz & Roger Ebert Truer Than Fiction Award.
Karin Chien of ‘The Exploding Girl’ received the Piaget Producers Award, while Joel and Ethan Coen received the annual Robert Altman Award for ‘A Serious Man.’
Low cost comedy ‘Humpday’ bagged the John Cassavetes Award for the best feature made under $500,000.
“I can't believe I'm up here two years in a row,” said 'Humpday's writer and producer Lynn Shelton.

The Independent Spirit Awards honor independent and original filmmaking.
Presented by Film Independent, a non-profit organization dedicated to independent filmmakers, the awards take place Saturday afternoon, a day before the Oscar night each year.
Winners are presented an acrylic glass pyramid containing suspended shoestrings. This year the awards completed 25th anniversary.
