Nicole Richie and rocker Joel Madden are engaged to be married. The couple disclosed this brilliant progression in their more-than-three year old relationship via different media.

The adopted daughter of soul singer Lionel Richie announced her engagement to the Good Charlotte singer while taping her interview on ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ on Monday night.

Excited about the engagement
After wrapping up the show, a beaming Richie reportedly headed to the New York restaurant Abe & Arthurs. She was not accompanied by Madden, but the excitement was quite palpable. “She was glowing,” said a source cited by PEOPLE. “She was telling her table how happy she was.”

Meanwhile, Madden took to his Twitter page to confirm his engagement and express gratefulness to the fans. "Yep. i'm engaged. Very happy," tweeted Madden on Monday. "Yeah we've been engaged for a while so your all kind of late on that. But Thanks for the hooplah all the same."

Best known for her role in the Fox reality television series, The Simple Life, Nicole Richie started dating rocker Joel Madden in December 2006. Together they have two children: a two-year-old daughter Harlow, and a five-month-old son Sparrow James Midnight Madden.

They are expected to tie the holy knot this summer and an excited Nicole is meticulously involved to get her wedding arrangements right. “Nicole and Joel are in the process of planning the wedding. She’s very involved in every detail. She’s thrilled,” a source tells the Us Weekly.

The time’s right now
Though more than three years of togetherness and two children could certify a family-like feeling, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden decided to keep off the nuptials till they were fully convinced they want to do it.

"I think for both of us, we are going to do it because we want to, not because that's what you do," said Richie, while talking to CNN's Larry King last year. "We're going to do it when the time's right."

Only a few months ago, in October, Richie had even dashed any chances of an upcoming marriage to her rocker boyfriend. "One day I would love to get married," she had said, adding that the two were not discussing marriage at that point.

“It's not something we're talking about right now. If my kids ask me to get married, I'd get married.”
