Taylor Swift, nominated for eight categories, won the Album of the Year Grammy for 'Fearless'. Swift also won Grammy for her smash hit 'White Horse' in the Best County Song category.
Los Angeles, February 1 -- The 52nd Grammy Awards proved highly propitious for female artists Beyonce and Taylor Swift. Both singers took home six and four Grammys respectively.
R&B singer Beyonce set a new record for winning the most Grammys in one night. The stylish diva was nominated for ten categories.
On the other hand, country singer and actress Taylor Swift, nominated for eight categories, won the Album of the Year Grammy for “Fearless”. Swift also won Grammy for her smash hit “White Horse” in the Best County Song category.
“I hope that you know how much this means to me ... that we get to take this back to Nashville! Our families are freaking out in their living rooms! My dad and my little brother are losing their minds in our living room right now!” said Swift after getting the Grammy.
The awards took place at the Staples Center and were broadcasted by CBS.
Beyonce won three Grammys for ‘Single Ladies’
Beyonce’s win was bigger than Swift’s on Sunday night. The 28-year-old won three Grammys for her ubiquitous ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)’. She also won Grammys for categories like Song of the Year, Best R&B Song, and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
“Halo” won Beyonce Best Pop Female Vocal Performance.
After accepting the award she said, “This has been such an amazing night for me. I'd like to thank my family, including my husband. I love you.”
Husband Jay-Z bagged three Grammys for Best Rap Song, Best Rap/sung collaboration for ‘Run This Town,’ and Best Rap Solo Performance for ‘D.O.A. (Death of Auto-Tune).’
Others at the Grammys
Other winners at the Grammys included rock band Kings of Leon for their album ‘Use Somebody’. The Nashville brothers won the Grammy Award for the Record of the Year.
“We're a little drunk, but we're happy drunk,” said Kings Drummer Nathan Followill.
He gave a long thank you list on receiving the award and said, “If there's anyone else I forgot; I'll buy you shots later.”
The Best Rock Album was taken by Green Day. R&B singer Maxwell won best male R&B performance and best R&B album for ‘BLACKsummers’ Night’.
Black Eyed Peas won three Grammys while Eminem and Lady Gaga took two each.
Zac Brown Band, a country-rock group from Atlanta, won Grammy for best new artist.
Indian music composer A.R. Rahman, won two Grammys for his music in Danny Boyle’s super hit movie Slumdog Millionaire.
Jackson honored at the Grammys
The 52nd Grammy awards were also host to some splashy performances. Lady Gaga, Elton John, Beyonce, and Taylor Swift rocked the awards night with their respective feats.
Other than that, the Grammys, voted by 12,000 members of the Recording Academy, also honored Pop legend Michael Jackson.
A 3-D tribute featuring Smokey Robinson, Celine Dion, Jennifer Hudson and Carrie Underwood showed Jackson’s recorded voice in his smash hit “Earth Song.”
Jackson’s two children, Prince and Paris, accepted their father’s lifetime achievement award.
“In all his songs, the message was simple: love,” said Prince. “We will continue to spread his message and help the world. Thank you.”
