The film industry is devastated with the tragic loss of acclaimed film editor Schmeer, whose other editing credits include 'Fast, Cheap, & Out of Control'. She also won an award for best editing at the Sundance Film Festival for the movie 'Sergio'.

Los Angeles, February 1: Karen Schmeer, a renowned documentary film editor whose credits include 'The Fog of War', was hit and killed Friday night on the Upper West Side by three men fleeing a robbery.

Cops have arrested a man Sunday who they claim is one of the three men who allegedly slammed their car into 39-year-old Schmeer after robbing an Upper West Side drug store Friday night. Tragic death of an editor Schmeer, of Boston, who worked with acclaimed director Errol Morris on the Oscar Award-winning documentary film about Vietnam War ‘The Fog of War’, which featured former Secretary of Defense Robert MacNamara, was crossing Broadway between West 90th and 91st streets when she was run over by criminals fleeing a scene of a crime. Her father Michael told New York Post that Schmeer was in town working on a film. According to him, his daughter was staying with a friend on West 89th Street and editing an HBO movie about the late chess great Bobby Fischer. Citing police officials, New York Times reports that Schmeer was crossing Broadway at 90th Street just before 8 p.m. on Friday when she was struck by the getaway car, a 2010 rented Dodge Avenger sedan. The car struck her so hard that she was knocked out of her boots, and pinned her against a double-parked car, her grocery bags scattered across the street. She was pronounced dead on arrival at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center, the NY Times reports. Driver arrested Authorities say three men held up a CVS drugstore at 86th Street and Amsterdam Avenue, making off with over-the-counter medication and fleeing in a getaway car. Patrol officers tried to pull the car over, but the driver eluded them, crashing into another automobile on 87th Street before striking the female editor. The shoplifters fled on foot, but the cops arrested the driver, identified as David McKie, 25, of Gables Florida and charged him with second degree murder in Manhattan Supreme Court. The police were still searching for McKie’s two alleged cohorts. Meanwhile, The New York Post reports that McKie has denied he was behind the wheel when the incident occurred. "I wasn't the driver," McKie said as he was led from the 24th Precinct station house. Friends and associates mourning The film industry is devastated with the tragic loss of acclaimed film editor Schmeer, whose other editing credits include ‘Fast, Cheap, & Out of Control’. She also won an award for best editing at the Sundance Film Festival for the movie ‘Sergio’. Morris called her death a "senseless tragedy" in his Twitter feed. "She was one of the most talented documentary fillmmakers working in the field today, said Greg Barker, who directed ‘Sergio’. "In a field with massive egos, Karen did her job with exceptional grace and kidness towards her colleagues. She's a great loss to this community."
