According to Chief State's Attorney Kevin Kane, Hayes has "undergone some kind of apparent medical emergency."
Hayes has been admitted at the University of Connecticut Health Center in Farmington, and the authorities there are staying tight-lipped about his condition. Some reports suggest that he was placed into an induced coma as a preventative measure. The reports could not be confirmed.
Hayes reportedly ingested large doses of pills that are a part of his daily medication. They did not disclose what kind of pills were those.
Charges on Hayes
Hayes is accused of killing Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters Hayley, 17, and Michaela, 11, during a home invasion in Cheshire, Conn., in 2007. The Jury selection in his trial at Superior Court in New Haven will be suspended today; it is expected that the postponement will last quite long.
Hayes, along with Joshua Komisarjevsky, broke into a Cheshire home in July 2007, beat the people in the house and tied them up. To destroy the evidence, they later set the house on fire.
They also hit Jennifer’s husband William Petit Jr., with a baseball bat and tied him up in the basement. But somehow, he managed to escape the fire.
If convicted, Hayes will face death penalty. But as of now, the trial has been delayed and the hearing is not expected to begin before September.
After learning the status from media reports, Petit’s father, William Petit Sr., expressed frustration at his knowledge of the incident being only as little as what the media had reported.
"We’ll just have to wait until tomorrow to find out more just like everybody else," Petit Sr. said.
Hayes’ history of drug overdose
Apparently, this is not the first time that Hayes has taken a drug overdose. A similar incident was reported last year; following the incident he was moved to Garner Correctional Institute in Newtown, only prison in Connecticut with psychiatric facilities.
An officer was made to sit outside his cell 24X7, for a suicide watch.
Though the two suspects in this case have been kept isolated from other prisoners, it is Hayes who has been absolutely unaided. Reportedly, Komisarjevsky does get some visitors but Hayes has not seen anyone other than his lawyers.
He is also reported to have lost a lot of weight since being put in the prison.
