Gibson took a long break from the big screen and left people wondering if he would ever return.
Los Angeles, January 29 -- Mel Gibson has been off the big screen for long, but now he’s back in front of the cameras, all geared up. And ‘Edge of Darkness’ seems to be just right for making a thunderous comeback.
It has been seven years since Gibson last acted in a movie and the time has somewhat started showing in his appearance. However, it works well for playing the character of Thomas Craven, a police detective whose 24-year-old daughter Emma (Bojana Novakovic) is the only passion in his life.
At one point Emma seems obviously disturbed and just when she’s about to reveal her knotty secret to her father, she gets shot in the chest, leaving a horrified Tom behind her.
The movie is based on a tender issue, but it is a thriller that portrays a father's love for his daughter, complete with emotion and suspense as he tries to track down the killer.
“This is about a guy who has to fulfill something that he probably failed to do for his daughter when she was alive,” explained Gibson, while talking to MTV. “He has to do it posthumously, and he sacrifices himself in the process. It's a one-way ticket. That's why it's the edge of darkness, I guess.”
Strong story for Mel
According to Mel, he decided to work in ‘Edge of Darkness’ as “This was a strong, compelling piece of work, a good story.”
But the bigger question is: why did he leave? In the past seven years, was there not one story good enough to have Mel Gibson? The actor has the answer.
“I walked away because I was feeling stale and bored by acting. I got into the directing thing, producing, writing all that sort of stuff,” Gibson told MTV. “Now, it felt like it was time to hop back in the saddle,” he added.
Gibson took a long break from the big screen and left people wondering if would ever return. Some even doubted if the actor still has some acting left in him.
Getting rejuvenated
On being asked, if he felt out of form or just jaded when he left, Gibson recalled something he’d learnt from an old acting teacher of his. “If you really want to rejuvenate your creative juices, walk away from your chosen spear of expertise for a while. Dig a ditch, do something with your hands, do something different and then come back, and magically your creative juices will be rejuvenated.”
Well, now since he seems rejuvenated, we should be seeing a lot more of Mel Gibson on screen. No promises, the actor only says he’s been “thinking about it.”
