Complaint filed against California octomom's doctor

Kamrava did not refer Suleman to a doctor for mental health evaluation. In fact, he negligently gave her high doses of fertility drugs

New York, January 5 -- The obstetrician/gynecologist who treated the mother of octuplets born in January last year in California has been accused of negligence.

In a complaint filed against the fertility doctor, California Medical Board stated that Michael Kamrava acted “beyond the reasonable judgment of any treating physician” by helping Nadya Suleman give birth to octuplets.

Suleman is referred as N.S. in the complaint. The octomom has identified Kamrava as her obstetrician in many interviews.

Gross negligence
As per the complaint filed on Dec. 22, Kamrava remained careless while treating Suleman during the 11 year period, beginning in 1997.

Kamrava’s treatment led to the birth of Suleman’s 14 children, including the octuplets. All the children were conceived through in-vitro fertilization.

Accusing the doctor, the medical board has stated that Kamrava had inserted excessive number of embryos, far beyond the recommendations of American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), in Suleman’s womb.

The society has recommended that no more than two embryos should be transferred in a woman aged 35 years, and no more than five in a woman above 40 years.

Also, Kamrava did not refer Suleman to a doctor for mental health evaluation. In fact, he negligently gave her high doses of fertility drugs.

Kamrava “provided IVF treatment without consideration regarding potential harm to N.S.'s future children", stated the complaint.

The aftermaths of octuplets’ birth
The news of Suleman giving birth to octuplets had raised a lot of concerns. The experts had condemned the whole process of in-vitro fertilization and criticized the doctor for carrying out the treatment.

In vitro fertilization is fertility treatment in which eggs are fertilized in a laboratory by donor sperm and implanted in the womb.

As a result of this widespread criticism, ASRM had suspended Kamrava in September.

If the accusations levied by California Medical Board are proved, there is a possibility of cancellation of Kamrava’s medical license.

The octuplets and the octomom
Nadya Suleman, a 33-year-old American divorcee in California, gave birth to six male and two female children on Jan. 26, 2009.

The children are only the second full set of octuplets to be born alive in the nation. Also, they are the world's longest-surviving octuplets.

The birth of octuplets by a single mother drew so much public interest that Suleman signed a deal in July with European production company Eyewitness, to star in a new reality television show with her 14 children.
