Kailua, Hawaii, January 2 -- President Barack Obama enjoyed a unique Hawaiian treat New Year’s day, when he visited Island Snow store in Hawaii.
The President, along with daughters Sasha and Malia, got his favorite flavors lemon, cherry, and passion guava for the ice cones. He chose not to add sweet azuki red beans or ice cream, unlike the usual tradition in Hawaii.
“It's the Snowbama. I like my shave ice straight, no frills,” said Obama, wearing a white T-shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals.
Crowd gathers to view vacationing President
More than a 100 people gathered around the store's parking lot to catch a glimpse of the vacationing president and his girls. People cheered for Obama and he waved back merrily at the crowd.
Malia, 11, and Sasha, 8, who have not been much in public view during the holidays, came to the store for the second time.
Obama’s friends Eric Whittaker and Marty Nesbitt were also seen there. However, first lady Michelle Obama could not be spotted.
The President, with his BlackBerry clipped onto his belt, teased his friends while standing in line.
President enjoys golf
The President also enjoyed a quiet time at the MidPacific Country Club Golf Course in Kailua Friday.
He returned greetings to a group of onlookers who wished him happy New Year. Upon being asked for a canoe ride by one of them, he said, “I would love to but I don’t think the Secret Service will let me.”
Obamas watch Avatar
The Obamas also joined the ranks of cinemagoers as they saw Cameron’s latest flick on New Year’s Eve. The 3-D sci-fi was showing near their Hawaii vacation home.
The President, accompanied by his family members and friends, watched the movie in complete privacy. It was reported that a complex was reserved for them specially and that an early morning screening of the film was also held for them.
They reached the mall at around 9:30 a.m. and left from a side door, three hours later. The President is due to depart Hawaii on Monday.
