New Year resolutions: hope or self-deception?

New York, December 29 -- As we prepare to toss 2009 into history, people around the world are preparing to delude themselves again--by making resolutions for the New Year. Is it a tradition that we must follow?

Whether it is perpetual hope or just a way of self-deception is a matter of perception. But it’s amusing to see people fooling themselves year-after-year with futile promises that fail to meet success.

Money matters
With recession and money concerns draining out the patience of most people, money tops the resolution list this time. Look around, everywhere you will find people who are proudly declaring their resolution to give up spending habits and become big savers instead.

Does that guarantee a tough year ahead for retailers? Well, going by the reputation of New Year resolutions, there should not be a need to worry

Weighty woes
Those who did not have to bother with the weight of their pockets this year are most likely to be disturbed by the burden on their bodies, which we popularly refer to as fat. Rich, in recent times, has come to mean you comfortably afford three big meals a day.

“I will exercise regularly this year”, “I will not miss the gym, even if it’s the day of my own wedding”, “I will eat healthy”, “I will not even touch those high-calorie sinful delicacies, no matter how much a drool over them”.

Yes, you’ve heard (and probably made) all these and similar weighty-resolutions over and over again and you probably know, no matter how you convince yourself, you will never fit into your high-school jeans. Why not try something wiser this time? Pass them on to someone who actually fits in and resolve to be happily healthy.

Resolutions that go up in smoke
Smokers and drinkers form another major group of resolution makers, who dupe themselves each year. How many have you met who actually gave up drinking/smoking only because it was their New Year resolution?

Another common resolution sprouts from the guilt that we all suffer after a heated session of arguments with our loved ones. Often, you must have heard: “I will spend more time with my family. Rather, I will try to get along with my family and not be rude to them”.

Other famous resolutions include: I will start waking up early, I will keep my house/room neat, I will not procrastinate etc.

Going by the past, most resolutions fail within a month or so. What follows a resolution is usually guilt, of not having kept it. The optimistic would advice making resolutions even if they last a month; at least we are good for 30 days, they reason.

Whatever you resolve to do, follow it with a stricter resolution of not ditching yourself. Else, go the easier way – Resolve to revel sans any resolutions.
