Kindle becomes most gifted Amazon item ever

Amazon's Kindle e-book broke all records by becoming 'the most gifted Amazon item ever' this Christmas

Seattle, December 27 -- The post-Christmas annual statement by Amazon.com has revealed that its Kindle e-book has become the most-gifted Amazon item ever this Christmas.

Reportedly, the e-book sales have outnumbered the sale of real books, and 9.5 million Kindle e-books were ordered on Dec. 14, which amounts to 110 e-books being ordered every second.

Jeff Bezos, the chief executive officer and founder of Amazon says, “We are grateful to our customers for making Kindle the most gifted item ever in our history.”

“The Kindle Store includes over 390,000 books and the largest selections of the most popular books people want to read, including New York Times Best Sellers and New Releases,” he adds.

E-books are very affordable and also cheaper than real books. Market analysts are assuming a further dip in the prices, now that Barnes & Noble's competing Nook e-reader is also in the market.

2009: An electronic Christmas
According to the holiday sales report released byAmazon.com, Apple has been the top seller in the electronic segment and its 8GB iPod touch is the second most gifted item this year.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic, Plantronics 510 Bluetooth Headset, and BlackBerry Bold 9700 Phone have been the most ordered items in the wireless purchase category.

Microsoft Office Home and Student edition 2007, Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 have been the top sellers in software segment, while the New Super Mario Bros and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 broke sales records in the video game segment.

Other electronic gadgets that were in great demand this year included the Casio Waveceptor Atomic Dual-Time Watch, Oster Electric Wine-Bottle Opener, Omron's HJ-112 Digital Pocket Pedometer and Bosch's Laser Distance Measuring Device.

Some Amazon facts
“If all the computers customers purchased this holiday were stacked one on top of the other, they would be more than twice as high as Mount Everest,” reports Amazon.com in its press release issued last evening.

“The last Local Express Delivery order that was delivered in time for Christmas, was placed by a Prime member and went to Seattle. It was a Kindle that was ordered at 1:43 p.m. on Christmas Eve and delivered at 4:57 p.m. that evening,” the release informed.

Digital Book Revolution?
The data submitted by Amazon marks the beginning of a digital book revolution that may be a threat to the sales of real books.

The technologists also feel that the Kindle e-book will continue to be the top seller in the e-reader category, as it offers digital prints from a host of bestselling authors for the readers.
