Fisher, 29, and Underwood, 26, have been dating for a year. The singer previously squashed reports that she is romantically involved with the sports star. And only last week she spoke for the first time in public about their love affair.
Engagement confirmed
Jessie Schmidt, a rep for Underwood, confirmed this happy news to UsMagazine.com, saying, "I'm happy to confirm that Carrie Underwood is engaged to Mike Fisher, and the couple couldn't be happier."
"No wedding date has been set at this time," Jessie tells Us.
Fisher also confirmed the news at a press conference on Monday, saying he proposed his sweetheart on Sunday.
The hockey star, who recorded his 300th career point for the Senators in their 4-1 win over the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, confirmed his engagement to Underwood in an interview with the Ottawa Sun.
"It's true," he told the newspaper. "We're both obviously excited and very happy and so, exciting times for sure.”
Fisher declined to offer any further details.
According to Us, Fisher’s teammate Chris Neil told reporters in the press conference that the hockey player called him shortly after he proposed Underwood. "I think it's great," Neil told reporters. "It's a long time coming. There's going to be a lot of broken hearts in Ottawa with all those girls who are in love with Mikey."
Relationship was largely kept out of the media
Underwood and Fisher have mostly kept their relationship largely under wraps since they began dating last year.
The former ‘Idol’ champ rubbished the reports that they were an item via her fan club Web site. “I read something recently that a certain someone and I were moving in together,” she wrote. “This is beyond not true...just another example of people making stuff up out of thin air!"
Carrie recently opened up about their affair
But lately, the pair has been opening up.
Underwood gushed about her hockey star beau on the liner notes of her current album, "Play On," that was released Nov. 3.
According to the Us magazine, she wrote, "Thank you (No.) 12 (referring to his jersey number.) You are the most amazing addition to my life! You are such a wonderful person and have had such an amazing hand in the building of this album and in the growth of me as a person. I love you so much! You make my life better in every way! I thank God for you every day... xoxo, Carrie."
Also, last month when The Associated Press asked the singer what her family thought of Fisher, she said they were supportive.
"They love me and I would hope my parents would think we raised a good, smart girl, so she's going to do the right thing no matter what it is," she said.
What next for newly engaged Carrie?
Underwood, who shot to fame after winning the singing competition, wants to start a family soon, according to Us.
The magazine says that the singer told Self in an interview for its January issue that, "not that I have a husband to have one with yet, but someday I'd like a family – not a big one, but not a small one either".
"Two kids is good; three is fine. Four? Somebody's getting something done, because we ain't having five!"
Before dating Fisher, Underwood was romantically linked to Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, “Gossip Girl” star Chace Crawford and former “Bachelor” star Travis Stork.
"Its Official: Carrie
"Its Official: Carrie Underwood engaged to hockey star Mike Fisher"
Sheesh. "It's" means "it is." Contractions are so third grade...
