Investigators intensify search for suspect in officer killings

Clemmons, suspected of slaying the four cops, is an ex-convict and has a long criminal record

New York, December 1 -- Maurice Clemmons, accused of killing four police officers in Washington, is alive and remains at large.

In an ambush style attack on cops--three male and a female--at a Parkland coffee shop, Clemmons was shot in the abdomen. Investigators had initially speculated that he might have died. But now they are certain that he is alive.

The investigators have intensified the hunt in and around Seattle. They are storming homes, searching the city streets to nab the accused.

At the same time, the students at the University of Washington have been alerted of an unconfirmed report that Clemmons is on or near the campus area.

The investigators Sunday night were positioned outside a Seattle house, where they believed he was holed up. They used sniper dogs, tried communicating with him through loudspeakers and even went door-to-door, but all in vain.

A reward of $125,000 has been announced for information leading to his arrest.

Relatives taken into custody
Meanwhile, the authorities have taken into custody some of Clemmons’ relatives to prevent them from helping him escape the police, thus cutting his support network.

Some of Clemmons relatives have been helping him escape the police and providing medical aid for the gunshot wound. He is also believed to have received help to gain access to guns.

One of the relatives rounded up is Clemmons sister, "We believe she drove him up to Seattle and bandaged him up," Ed Troyer, a spokesman for the Pierce County Sheriff told the Associated Press.

"We think his network of people helping him is running out. He's probably on his own." He further added, “What we're going to do is eliminate those people, so he'll have no place to go.”

Clemmons’ criminal past
The man suspected of slaying the four cops is an ex-convict and has a long criminal record.

According to the court records, Clemmons is accused of assaulting Pierce County sheriff's deputy and raping a child.

In addition, his neighbor had complaint that he had hurled a brick through the driver-side window of her SUV. In fact, he has been described as increasingly erratic by his family members.

Prior to this, he has been charged with at least five felony convictions in Arkansas.

Clemmons had been released on $150,000 bail five days before killing the police officers.

The night before the shooting, Clemmons had threatened to kill police officers, but the witnesses did not report the threat before the killings took place.

The slain officers have been identified as Sgt. Mark Renninger, 39; Officer Ronald Owens, 37; Officer Tina Griswold, 40; and Officer Greg Richards, 42.
