B&N launched the e-reader in late October, and had planned to bring it to stores on Nov. 30. However, now it will be distributing the sets to the customers before the Christmas season.
Only the products ordered this year before Nov. 20 will be shipped. The shipments are expected to start from Dec. 11.
A synopsis of Nook
B&N has strong competition from Amazon.com’s Kindle and Sony’s Daily Edition Reader. The only edge that it has is that Nook can lend books and get connected to Wi-Fi networks provided the receiver has either a Nook or a compatible device like iPhone, BlackBerry, Palm, or PC.
B&N's Nook is 7.7 inches by 4.9 inches by 0.5 inches and weighs 11.2 ounces (app. 317 g).
It has a 6-inch grayscale screen for displaying contents of various books, newspapers, magazines. There is also a touchscreen, which can be used as a keyboard and an internal storage of 2GB that can store about 1,500 books.
Books can be directly downloaded on Nook through Wi-Fi or AT&T’s 3G network.
“Fastest selling product"
It has been reported that B&N, which has been seriously dealing with limited availability of Nook, wasn’t first planning to sell it this year.
Nook, which is termed as the “fastest selling product” by retailers, will be out of stock for holidays and will be available only after Jan. 4. This is one of the reasons that B&N has notified its customers to order the Nook early.
"Due to high demand, we are prioritizing pre-orders so that those people who ordered before Nov. 20 will receive them for Christmas,” said Mary Ellen, vice president for corporate communications at B&N.
Leading experts have predicted that among electronic readers it will be a hot gift item this holiday season. It will allow consumers to read with the use of Wi-Fi facility.
Rival Sony Corp., which expects its device to be shipped from Dec.18 onwards, has announced that e-book readers will be an extremely popular product this holiday season.
