The shooting at Fort Hood, the largest military post in the nation, left 12 civilians dead and 43 other injured, while Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, was shot four bullets, fired by the military police.
Hasan to remain in intensive care
Hasan has been charged with 13 counts of murder. At the hearing Saturday, the magistrate stated that there was “a probable cause” that Hasan carried out the shooting at the military post on Nov. 5.
The military magistrate ruled that Hasan, who is paralyzed from the chest down, would stay at the Brooke Army Medical Center for now.
"He is an individual in need of constant medical attention,” John Galligan, defense attorney, was quoted by ABC NEWS as saying. “He has no sensation from his chest down."
The judge has ordered a change in Hasan’s status from pretrial restriction to pretrial confinement, meaning he will be confined until his court martial.
Federal investigators intercept messages
In the meantime, FBI has obtained emails, which show the secret financial transfers between Hasan and Anwar al-Awlaki, a radical American-born cleric.
At least 18 emails have been intercepted by the federal investigators, and investigation is being carried out to find out why these emails were not passed on to the military officials.
In one of the emails, Hasan wrote to al-Awlaki, "I can't wait to join you.”
Hasan had also asked al-Awlaki, the al-Qaeda sympathizer, if it was right to conduct jihad and whether killing innocent people was permissible.
Al-Awlaki was one an Imam at the mosque in Falls Church, Virginia, where Hasan occasionally worshipped. Currently, he runs a Web site criticizing U.S. policies. His site has praised Hasan’s action at the Fort Hood as heroic.
