Members of her crew were on board, but the 16-year-old Disney star wasn't when the vehicle crashed on an Interstate in rural Virginia on Friday (November 20), Virginia State Police said.
Deadly crash
An unidentified person died and nine other people sustained injuries after one of Cyrus' tour buses ran off the left side of the road, struck an embankment and flipped over.
MTV News is reporting that multiple sources have identified the deceased as the driver of the bus. One of the other nine passengers on the bus carrying Cyrus' production crew suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.
According to Sgt. Thomas Molnar, the crash occurred around 8:15 a.m. in Dinwiddie County, about 40 miles south of Richmond. He said the passengers exited the bus through the front windshield.
Slippery roads at the time of crash
TMZ has cited Virginia State Police officials as saying that the roads were slick at the time of the crash, due to overnight rains. However, speed and weather weren't considered factors.
It was unknown at press time if the driver died before or after the black and maroon luxury tour bus skidded and overturned.
Tour bus was not Miley’s
The celebrity gossip Web site also reported that the bus was one of four in a tour caravan transporting the teen queen, who is slated to play a show on Sunday in Greensboro, North Carolina.
"It was one of our tour buses, but not Miley's,” Cyrus’ manager told TMZ. "It was one of our buses that transported our lighting crew."
An investigation is underway to determine why the vehicle drifted off the road and overturned.
Disney’s darling Miley Cyrus is the daughter of country singer Billy Ray. The teen singing sensation began her solo singing career in 2007 with her debut album, Meet Miley Cyrus. She is scheduled to play two dates in London next month.
