In 2003, Chandler's brother told CNN that he feared for his life after some die-hard Jackson fans started giving him threatening calls
Los Angeles, CA, November 19 -- Evan Chandler, the father of a boy who accused late pop icon Michael Jackson of sexual abuse, has committed suicide by shooting himself in the head, according to multiple tabloid reports citing a police source as saying.
Chandler was the 65-year-old father of Jordy Chandler, the boy who accused pop star of sexual abuse in 1993, when he was 13-years-old.
Jordy, now 29, was allegedly paid approximately $20 million by the King of Pop to stop speaking about his claims that he was abused during sleepovers with him in 1992, when he was 12.
Chandler killed himself
A onetime Beverly Hills dentist, Chandler was found dead in his luxury waterfront Jersey City apartment in New Jersey, holding a firearm with a gun shot wound to the head.
He killed himself earlier this month after battling his debilitating illness for long, People.com quoted authorities as reporting.
Although Chandler died on Nov. 5, news of his death only emerged Tuesday (17.11.09) after a doctor, who was treating him for cancer, said he missed an appointment. His death came five months after the pop icon died at his Los Angeles home from acute Propofol intoxication.
Jersey City Police Department spokesman Stan H. Eason told the magazine that Chandler died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head from a .38-caliber revolver.
Chandler’s death ruled suicide
Chandler was found dead by a concierge at his apartment after he failed to keep a doctors appointment, the reports says. He was fully clothed and there wasn’t any suicide note nearby.
"We have ruled it as suicide because he was found with a gun held to his body. He had a single bullet wound to the side of his head,” several other tabloid reports have quoted a police source as saying.
"There was no note but officers did find medication in keeping with a serious medical condition."
Chandler was ill
People reports that Chandler was suffering from a serious ailment at the time of his death.
Also, a source close to the family told ABC News that the suicide of the dad-of-four was not related to pop legend MJ’s recent tragic death but most likely cause due to his longtime debilitating illness.
Diane Diamond, author of "Be Careful Who You Love: Inside the Michael Jackson Case," told ABC News that Chandler was suffering from a rare metabolic disorder called Gaucher disease, a hereditary condition mostly affect the Ashkenazi Jewish population.
People with this disease suffer a slow, painful deterioration and if they do not seek medication their pain can be excruciating. As per Diamond, Jordy’s parents reportedly received $1.5 million each as part of the confidential financial settlement handler and his son reached with the singer after filing a lawsuit.
Diamond said Chandler did not take care of his condition
Chandler was estranged from Jordy, his two ex-wives, his children from his second marriage, and his two brothers.
He and Jordy had been estranged since 2006, when the latter earned a restraining order after claiming his father attacked him with a dumbbell.
Earlier feared for his life
In 2003, Chandler's brother told CNN that he feared for his life after some die-hard Jackson fans started giving him threatening calls.
"There's a hard-core group, there was and probably still is, of fanatical fans who see him as a deity," Ray Chandler -- a lawyer in Santa Barbara County -- told CNN's Larry King at the time. "Some of them will go to any lengths that, you know, there's some who will just go as far as threatening, there's some who will go -- who will be violent, and you know, you never know how far it is going to go."
