New York, October 22 -- Microsoft has formally launched its much hyped operating system Windows 7 Thursday, thus offering a refinement over its predecessor Windows Vista.

Windows 7 promises a much better user experience than that offered by its predecessor—Windows Vista.

Many users have raised concerns over Vista performance. Common complaints reported were horsepower requirements, incompatibility with many devices plugged into the system like camera, phones etc, and its disorderly security features.

The software giant claims that major problems of Windows have been taken care of in Windows 7.

The new operating system guarantees a streamlined interface, improved security features, support for touch screen and assures to be more user friendly than Vista.

Key product features
Though the new operating system offers many upgrades, the top product features include:

Snap facility- this enables users to instantly open two windows exactly side by side

Live Task preview that allows scanning through open files or programs

Home group that enables users to share music, pictures, video, and documents, files etc

Pin feature that keeps all the files handy by pinning them to the taskbar or Jump Lists

Windows Search is a facility to instantly locate and open virtually any file on your PC, from documents to emails to songs, etc just by typing a word or two. It offers search feature on the PC similar to search on the Internet.

Microsoft hoping to rev up market share
With the much assured upgrades, the software giant is hoping to increase its market share, which has plummeted in the recent quarters.

The reason: Vista was so poorly reviewed that many of the users decided to keep to their older operating system, Windows XP; and also because of the economic downturn. Further, software giant’s fiercest rivals like Apple and Google continued to eat into its market share.

Laura DiDio, principal analyst at Information Technology Intelligence Corp., a research and consulting firm in Boston was quoted by Los Angeles Times as saying, "If we started to hear the things about Windows 7 that we heard about Vista, people would have turned their backs on it. That would have been disastrous for Microsoft."

End users welcome upgrades
Majority of the users of the new operating system have voiced contentment with the upgrades offered by Microsoft and believe that it is much better than Vista and best Windows yet.

A user named AndrionGrey posted his view on Twitter, “Has installed Windows 7 and is very, very impressed so far. Highly rated indeed.”

Another user named FreneticFoible Tweeted, “Windows 7 installed. It's very pretty and very quick. I welcome myself to the world of 64 bit home computing. Geek out.”

With my current setup using the nVidia 680i SLI chipset, which is known for shoddy performance (bad core logic), Vista crashed daily. It was pretty bad until SP1 was released which made the experience somewhat tolerable.

“With Windows 7, I have yet to see ANY problem with my setup even with some minor overclocking. My computer runs 10-15%less resources with Windows 7 and performs better than Vista, commented a user named Jacksun Johnsun (Jacksonianion) on npr.org.”
