Raley's recall tainted cantaloupes

Grocery chain recalled 1120 cartons of cantaloupe after routine testing established the presence of salmonella in the fruit

Los Angeles, CA, October 19 -- Raley's, the grocery chain in Northern California, has recalled several hundred cartons of Del Monte brand of cantaloupe, after scheduled testing detected salmonella in the fruit.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) confirmed that the West Sacramento-based grocery chain had, of its own accord, recalled 1,120 cartons cantaloupe suspecting the fruit to be contaminated.

The alert was issued by the CDPH to warn the consumers who still had the affected cantaloupe in their possession.

Saul Cardona, assistant produce manager, confirmed, “Yes we did take them off the shelves … when we got a call from corporate.”

The affected cantaloupe were sold during the first half of October, primarily at the Nob Hill Foods in south Salinas, Bel Air and Food Sources stores in Nevada and Northern California.

The Raley's stores had removed the cantaloupes off the shelves as early as Oct. 16. The Salinas store has provided fliers at its fruit display elucidating the recall.

The organism salmonella can, at times, lead to fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and people with weakened immune systems. The symptoms include fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

So far, no reports of illnesses have been reported due to the Raley's cantaloupes.
