After conducting series of tests, the Los Angeles-based company reported that the new operating system takes one minute and 34 seconds to boot, thus 42 percent slower than Vista, which takes one minute and six seconds to start up.
The moot issue here is the start up point. iolo Technologies has taken the start point as the point where the system becomes fully usable, whereas Microsoft has measured the startup point from power button to the desktop.
iolo has stated that Window 7 is faster than Vista when its startup time to the desktop is measured, which is 40 seconds, but the new operating system loads slower than its predecessor to become fully usable.
Startup time degrades over time
Even the trials conducted by other firms have confirmed iolo’s findings. According to the test by PC World, Windows 7 is slower than Vista by 10 to 14 percent.
iolo has also reported that over a period of time start up time will further degrade, as has previously been witnessed in Vista.
After some commonly used applications are installed on the system, boot time increases to two minutes. Further, over the years, the boot up will become more sluggish. By the end of two years the start up time will increase by 330 percent, iolo stated.
End users refute iolo’s claims
Despite iolo Technologies assertion that Windows 7 is slower than Vista, end users are not worried.
In fact, many of the users can be read contradicting iolo’s claims on blogs and forums. They believe that iolo’s report is aimed at boosting sales of its software that boots PCs faster.
A user named N900 posted his view on engadget.com saying, “I'm running 7 UL and it takes about 37-38 seconds to boot. After the logging in, it took 14 seconds for the taskbar to appear, and then connect to the internet. All in all about 51 seconds to become fully usable.”
Another user named Robert commented on the same forum, “If I wanted to sell PC Tune-up software I would come out with the exact same study. Also, I didn't know people still reboot. Other than software updates why does this matter? I've been using Windows 7 since August 6 and have not noticed and performance degradation and I'm a web developer/graphics designer which means I push my system to the limit.”
“IOLO technologies sells PC tune up software. They have a conflict of interest. i.e. it's in their interest to claim that Win7 is slow and needs their tune up software,” commented dhavleak on cnet news.
Yes i totally agree with
Yes i totally agree with this. I have Win 7 and Vista on same box and my vista works like charm and it boots faster then Win 7. I can log on as soon as login window is displayed but with Win7 it takes time to load your profile and desktop. Interesting fact is both consumes same amout of memory but Win7 is bit intelligent it will try to load off some unused applications but if you use same applications and notice both have almost same CPU and Memory utilization.

It was a very nice idea! Just wanna say thank you for the information you have shared. Just continue writing this kind of post. I will be your loyal reader. Thanks again.
Windows 7
Are they using a 386? Windows 7 boots faster than any Windows OS I have ever seen in the 15 years I have been in I.T.
It is stable AND fast and virtually every app works perfectly.
I did not have to add ANY drivers when I installed it and it picked up EVERY piece of hardware.
And NO I do not work for Microsoft!!
Who cares?
As somebody mentioned...who cares what the boot up time is? Also what is "their" definition of "usable"? My Win7 machine is usable in about 35 seconds because I can open up an app. I bet they are measuring the time the decide to push the button all the way till when the hard drive stops being accessed constantly. There is one thing to note that is similar but better executed than Vista...the delayed startup option for some of the services. Vista has it, Win7 has it but it is better utilized in Win7 allowing the desktop to come up faster for the users and allowing users to start working faster.
And who reboots anymore anyways? The biggest thing to be timing is going into and coming out of standby and hibernate. My 6 year old laptop comes out of hibernate in about 7 seconds (if that) and is already reconnected to the wireless network. This is a HUGE improvement over Vista. That is where the time should be measured, not in startup where people might experience it once a month due to updates (which by the way are installed at 3am in the morning and you are probably sleeping when it reboots so you would never have to sit and wait for a reboot).
Wow! This really brought out the trolls!
Was there one word in this article about Apple or Macs? Doesn't matter; there will be some troll who will find a way to bash Apple.
Windows 7 -does- seem to suck way less than Vista. Unfortunately, MS doesn't provide any iLife-type apps with the OS so you have to, somehow, locate them and install them yourself. Wonder what we'll see about performance then? Anyone like to provide the download links to MS's free photo-, music-, video-, and web-editing apps?
Designed to be that way
Microsoft designed 7 to be that way so it boots faster to a usable desktop and other less important services load in the background. If you look at your services you will see quite a few now say "Automatic (Delayed Start)". In my opionion this provides for a much better "quality of experience" than any previous Microsoft OS.
Just another company not telling the whole story...
Huh
Lies! I have a Windows 7 and Vista box, Same hardware. I boot quicker on my 7 box by 20 seconds. I am so glad these retards wrote this article now the mac babies will cry how 7 is trash. Oh and I love the new 7 commercials no attacks just a warning of Fun, sure beats the attacks of inaccuracy from apple
C.r.a.p
that's so much B S. Vista is the worst OS EVER and Win 7 is probably the best MS-OS so far its like win ME vs Win XP.you should be more carefully... and by the way I've been using Win 7 for a while now... MSDN subscriber you know.
One flaw in your post...
"Vista is the worst OS EVER"
Not true... The Mistake Edition (Windows M.E.) is the worst edition EVER. Vista is a close second. (sorry just had to say it.)
