New York, September 9 -- Monopoly, the age-old game of building property, is all set to be launched at a global level.

Monopoly City Streets, developed by toymaker Hasbro, will go online today for four months.

"This autumn, Monopoly is launching a game of property empire building on an unimaginable scale in a bid to uncover the greatest property magnate the world has ever known," Hasbro, the company behind the 74-year-old game, stated in a blog post. "The entire planet will be pitted against one another in an online game of Monopoly, turning the globe into one giant game board."

Goggle Maps to be used as playing board
The free online game will use Google Maps as a playing board.

"Have Google helped us? Of course, they've been great and have really gotten behind the project with all the support we needed," the company claimed on the Monopoly City Streets blog. "Who else has helped us? The project was made possible by using the street data from OpenStreetMap, combined with Google Maps, API tastic!"

The players will also be able to design their own building for Monopoly City Streets, using Google's SketchUp service.

It is yet not clear whether the game will be launched in partnership with Google, or Hasbro is simply using Google’s services.

Playing Monopoly at a global level
The goal of the game is to earn money on property and become richest property magnate. New players are given $3 million Monopoly dollars to "purchase" any property and set up their virtual empire.

Every street in the world is available for purchase. However several high profile valuable properties have been snapped up.

One can build houses, castles and skyscrapers etc. and earn rent on them. Streets can also be traded between players. The game makers have also introduced chance cards that will allow players to sabotage their rivals by building hazards on their streets.

The toymaker claims it will be "the biggest game of monopoly of all time" and will enable players to buy almost "any street in the world".

Monopoly City Streets officials Web site calls the stunt a "world of property empire building on an unimaginable scale".

The game will be available until January end in English, Spanish, German, French, and Dutch.
