Actress Melanie Griffith checks herself into rehab again

Sources told Star magazine that the actress checked into rehab after failing to battle her longtime alcohol addiction

Los Angeles, August 25: Actress Melanie Griffith has checked herself into a rehab facility again, her rep has confirmed to People. Griffith entered the facility as part of a "routine plan" of sobriety, the rep said.

It is the third time the Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe winner has entered the rehab to help overcome prescription drug problems.

Griffith’s third stint in rehab
The 52-year-old actress’ rep Robin Baum told People that Griffth entered the facility as part of a "routine plan" designed by her doctors years ago.

“She is there to reinforce her commitment to stay healthy. This is part of a routine plan that was designed between her and her doctors years ago,” Baum said.

Griffith reportedly is seeking treatment at the Cirque Lodge, in Utah, the same facility where actresses Kirsten Dunst and Lindsay Lohan have both spent time in recent years.

Sources told Star magazine that the actress checked into rehab after failing to battle her longtime alcohol addiction. The magazine states that Griffith’s latest stint in rehab is actress’ attempt to save her marriage.

An insider told the tabloid: "She's working with the counsellors on getting control of her demons. The reason Melanie checked in was her husband was demanding that she get clean and sober."

Another source told the Star, "Melanie's struggling right now, but Antonio has been checking in on her as much as he is allowed, making sure she gets back on her feet."

Griffith’s struggle with drugs and alcohol dates back to the late 1970’s and early 80’s. In an effort to kick her addiction to medicine prescribed for a neck injury, she checked herself into the Hazelden Clinic in 1988 and also had a stay at the Daniel Freedman Hospital in 1998.

In 2000, Griffith admitted publicly that she was seeking treatment for a drug problem. "My doctor has referred me to the Daniel Freeman Hospital to step down from the prescribed medication that I have been taking for a neck injury," she said, according to People Magazine.

The American actress, who is married to Spanish actor Antonio Banderas, has previously spoken about her battles with addiction on her personal website.

She wrote on her Website: "Overcoming addictions is tough but it can be made easier if you have someone that can offer support. My husband and family supported me so much through this journey and continue to do so. The thought of my babies and husband really made me focus on my recovery."

Griffith’s personal and professional life
Griffith was born August 9, 1957 in New York City to onetime fashion model Tippi Hedren and producer and former actor/advertising executive Peter Griffith. She is perhaps best known for her breakout role in Working Girl (1988, with Harrison Ford).

Griffith is also known for her high-profile marriages to actors Don Johnson and Antonio Banderas. She married Johnson in 1976, when she was 18 years old; they divorced just six months later. The actress remarried Johnson in 1989 and divorced him again in 1996. She finalized her divorce from Johnson in February 1996, and married Banderas on May 14, 1996.
