The 45-year-old powerhouse actor cited his children as the reason he kicked the habit
Los Angeles, August 17: Actor Brad Pitt, who played a pot smoker in 1993’s True Romance, recently admitted he used to smoke marijuana in real life too, but quit the habit only after becoming a dad.
In a ‘reveal-all’ interview with HBO’s Bill Maher, the Hollywood heartthrob spoke about his pot-smoking past and what caused him to quit as well as expressed his disbelief in higher power, again.
When promoting his new movie, “Inglourious Basterds”, on ”Real Time with Bill Maher”, Pitt admitted that he smoked his fair share of pot but he stopped smoking pot when he became a father.
Pitt’s pothead past
“I certainly had my day,” Pitt told Maher Friday after the talk show host called the actor’s role in the movie True Romance “one of the best stoner performances”. In the 1993 movie, Pitt played a pretty convincing stoner.
Maher also recounted a New Year’s Eve party at which Pitt rolled “the most perfect” joints all night long, to which the actor replied: “I’m an artist.”
The 45-year-old powerhouse actor cited his children as the reason he kicked the habit. "I'm a dad now. You want to be alert and my eyes used to glaze over when I did that," he said.
Pitt has six kids with his long-time partner, U.S. actress and humanitarian aid worker Angelina Jolie. The celebrity couple’s, known in the media as "Brangelina" brood includes: a 7-year-old son Maddox, whom Jolie adopted from neighboring Cambodia in 2002; another son Pax, 5, whom she adopted from Vietnam; a 4-year-old daughter Zahara, whom she adopted in year 2006 from Ethiopia; and three biological kids - 3-year-old daughter Shiloh Nouvel, and one-year-old son Knox Leon and his twin sister Vivienne Marcheline.
Pitt on religion and gay marriage
In addition to his pot-smoking past, Pitt also chatted with Maher about his pro-gay marriage and anti-religion thoughts.
"What is it about religion you don't like?" Maher asked Pitt.
"You know, I grew up in a religious family, in a religious community and it just doesn't make sense to me. It just doesn't work for me in the long run," Pitt said. "I never wanted to step on anyone else's religion and their beliefs -- that's what's great about our country -- until I started seeing it defining policy. ... Like gay marriage, you have a group of people telling other people how to live their lives, and you can't do that."
He continued: "I just say you have to, you really have to check what country you're living in because the freedom that allows you to practice religion is the same freedom you're stepping on. That's not right. And I want to add that if there was a nation of gay married couples who were telling you you couldn't practice your religion, I'd be speaking up for you too. So, let's stop the nonsense."
