The statement, released Wednesday by the Michael Douglas' spokesperson, came on the heels of Cameron's girlfriend arrest for trying to smuggle heroin to Cameron in an electric toothbrush while he was under house arrest
Los Angeles, August 13: Two weeks after the arrest of actor Cameron Douglas, his parents have broken their silence, saying they were "devastated" by their troubled son's arrest for drug trafficking.
Cameron was arrested at an upscale hotel in New York for carrying a large quantity of an addictive drug with the intent to distribute it. The Associated Press reported at the time that the 30-year-old son of Oscar-winning actor Michael Douglas was arrested July 28 on a methamphetamine-dealing charge at the Hotel Gansevoort in Manhattan.
Douglas family address Cameron’s arrest
Speaking publicaly for the first time since Cameron's July 28 arrest, Michael Douglas and his ex-wife Diandra said in a statement: “The family is devastated and very disappointed in Cameron’s recent behavior. Any family who has dealt with substance abuse knows how devastating it can be.”
The statement, released Wednesday by the actor’s spokesperson, came on the heels of Cameron's girlfriend arrest for trying to smuggle heroin to Cameron in an electric toothbrush while he was under house arrest.
Girlfriend’s brush with the law
Kelly Sott, 32, was caught trying to pass a heroin-filled electric toothbrush to Cameron while he was under house arrest in New York. When a security guard checked a black bag brought by Sott for her beau he found an electric toothbrush with about seven grams of heroin hidden in its battery compartment. The security guard then informed authorities.
Sott, who told authorities she was unaware of what was stashed in the toothbrush, is now charged with drug smuggling and being held without bail at the Metropolitan Correction Center. She is due to appear in court for preliminary hearing on Sept. 10.
Cameron’s arrest
Cameron was nabbed at the Gansevoort Hotel in Manhattan's stylish Meat-Packing District during an undercover drug bust by a task force from a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
Authorities alleged that at the time Cameron was carrying a half-pound of an illegal drug methamphetamine, which costs about $80 a gram on the streets, meaning Cameron had more than 18,000 dollars worth of the hard drug with him at the time of arrest.
The younger Douglas was arrested on charges of distributing the illegal drug, and was then released on bail and confined to an apartment. But, he has been moved to the Metropolitan Correctional Center in New York City after allegedly violating the terms of his home detention. The actor allegedly asked his girlfriend to bring him heroin stashed in an electronic toothbrush.
If convicted on the drug-trafficking charges, Cameron could face a minimum of ten years in prison, with a possible life sentence.
