1. Develop a Habit of Saving
Start saving your money. Make it a habit to save an amount every week or every month. No matter how small is the amount, it’s important that you start saving. Obviously, once you start, you gradually increase your periodic contribution towards your savings.
You will find that doing so on a regular basis will quickly build a store of reserve money for you and you will be motivated to save more. The first step is, no doubt, the toughest, but it won’t seem so tough once you gain momentum. So start today!
2. Lay Out a Personal Budget
In order to save your money, you must know how much is your income and how much are your expenses. In other words, to cut the costs, you must know your costs. Preparing a budget of money inflow and outflow will make you identify areas where you can save.
3. Go for Second-Hand Stuff
There is no doubt that we all like to buy new things. But you can save a great deal if, instead of going for ‘new’ things, you buy ‘as good as new’ things.
For example, cars lose one-third of their value in the first 24 months when bought brand-new. Items like clothes can be worth a lot less even a day after being new. Other pre-loved stuff includes electrical goods, garden items, tools and sheds, household items like pots and pans etc.
4. Avoid Excessive Debt
Some debts may be essential in our lives. For example, we may need a mortgage to buy a house. But we must try to avoid debts which can be avoided. More debts means we need to pay more interests.
We often fail to realize this, but credit card debts are one of the most expensive debts we carry. We may need our credit card to make day to day purchases, but we must make an unbreakable rule to pay off the monthly outstanding balance timely. This simple rule will help you save the interest charges on your card.
5. Eat in Rather Than Eating Out
This is a habit that will benefit you not just financially, but health-wise too. This is an area where you can save largely. For example, if you make yourself a coffee at home and take it to the office in a leak proof thermal mug, you will save $3 per cup every day. That is $60 a month and $720 a year, just by making your own coffee.
Eating is the same. Instead of walking into a fast food restaurant after work, why not wait until you get home and have a more nutritious meal and save money at the same time?
So there you have them. Five quick pills to save well. Apply these simple tips in your life on a routine basis, and the effects will follow in no time. Happy saving!
