According to court records, the new mom will receive $30,471 in spousal support every month, while the divorcing couple’s son Knight will receive $9,027 in child support
California, July 24: Singer Kelis, who has given birth to her first child, a boy, two days ago, will get money in monthly support from her soon-to-be-ex husband Nas, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ruled.
The recording artist Kelis gave birth to a baby boy in New York on Wednesday night, and her estranged husband, rapper Nas, is the baby's father. The couple is in the middle of an acrimonious divorce.
Kelis receives hefty sums in both spousal & Child support
On Thursday (july 23), Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Louis Meisinger ordered rapper Nas to pay his estranged wife almost $44,000 a month in spousal and child support.
The ruling came one day after the “Milkshake” singer gave birth to the divorcing couple's baby son, Knight, at a New York hospital.
According to court records, the new mom will receive $30,471 in spousal support every month, while the divorcing couple’s son Knight will receive $9,027 in child support.
The rapper was also ordered to pay $45,000 in legal and accounting fees.
A follow up hearing is scheduled for Sept. 8, in which it will be determined if the payments should be altered.
Kelis, (real name Kelis Rogers), 29, and Nas, (real name Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones), 35, are currently embattled in a bitter divorce battle. Kelis filed for divorce in April, four months after she announced she was pregnant. In the divorce petition, Kelis cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split.
The couple’s history
The pair met in 2002 at an MTV Video Music Awards after party thrown by rap mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, and dated for two years before marrying in Atlanta in Jan. 8, 2005.
While rumors of Kelis and Nas splitting began surfacing on the Internet in March 2008, Kelis’ divorce petition in April still took many by surprise because mere a week ago Nas had told MTV News excitedly about his wife’s pregnancy and the unborn child.
“She’s great, man. She’s doing good,” the hip hop star had said of his pregnant wife early in an interview with the MTV News.
During the interview, Nas had not hinted on their upcoming split, rather had said they were working on coming up with names for their first child together.
“Yeah [We are deciding between] a few baby names,” he had told MTV News. “It's kinda hard. I've been thinking about kinda putting something online: 'Choose his name.' You get a couple stacks for that. We take care of you for that. You win something real. But we're thinking now."
Nas has a 15-year-old daughter from a previous relationship.
