Los Angeles, July 9: Probably a billion people from around the world tuned in to Michael Jackson’s memorial service held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on Tuesday. Many followed the news since the pop icon was reported dead on June 25 and his memorial service is one of the most watched public farewells in history. Millions watched as the Jackson family and the world paid tribute to the King of Pop

The public memorial service gave fans a chance to be with their idol before he was laid to rest and by broadcasting it through television and internet, those who weren’t able to attend the service could be with him.

Millions of television viewers
On Wednesday, Nielsen Media Research reported that more than 31 million viewers tuned in to 19 television networks such as CNN, MSNBC, CBS and FOX, to watch the historic event from their television screens. This number was even bigger than those who watched the funeral of two of the country’s former presidents, Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford.

It must also be noted that the given number only accounts for television viewers in the country. In the United Kingdom, BBC2 viewers averaged at four million while Channel Five and Sky News viewers are estimated to be at two million.

The number of viewers from other television networks who broadcasted the memorial service from other countries in the world was not available and there could possibly be tens of millions of viewers more.

Live internet video streams
Aside from television, Jackson’s memorial service was also broadcasted on internet websites. MSNBC.com had 4.4 million live video streams of the ceremony and a total of 19 million video streams on Tuesday while CNN.com had 3.1 million and 10 million, respectively. Yahoo.com also reported getting 5 million live video streams of the ceremony.

Social networking websites such as Facebook and Twitter also had their users talking about Jackson’s memorial service.

Michael Jackson has been involved in many controversies but his unexpected death shows that many people still support and love him.

People in this news:

Passing of an era

I think Michael was a heavenly phenomenon. That never happened before him and will not happen again. He will be dearly missed. I am still in some sort of disbelief that he is not there anymore
I think Al Sharpton summarized his life really well, when he said during the memorial that Michael's kids should know that if someone tries to tell them their father was strange they should know that it was not their father who was strange but strange was what he had to deal with.... from childhood to unparalleled stardom and rechless allegations by some greedy leeches and rating hungry media and pigs like Martin Bashir.
