Steve Jobs had liver transplant: Report

Washington, June 20: Apple Inc.’s chief executive officer, Steve Jobs, had a liver transplant about two months back, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Washington, June 20: Apple Inc.’s chief executive officer, Steve Jobs, had a liver transplant about two months back, reports the Wall Street Journal. Steve Jobs, 54, withdrew his involvement from the day-to-day management at Apple, citing unspecified health problems in January

Some directors of the company were aware of the surgery, which occurred in Tennessee, and were briefed about Jobs’ condition every few days by the doctors, the report said.

Retreating from work
Jobs, 54, withdrew his involvement from the day-to-day management at Apple, citing unspecified health problems. He had been convalescing after the treatment for an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor in 2004, according to the reports carried out by several publications in January.

He is well on the track to recovery and is scheduled to return to his job later this month. His doctors, however, may insist that Jobs only works part-time for a month or two initially, said the newspaper.

While ceasing his management role at Apple more than five months ago, Jobs had announced that he had been losing weight throughout 2008 and was being treated for a "hormone imbalance".

COO Cook handed control of daily activities
Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who was handed day-to-day management when Jobs went on leave, may continue to deal with the daily operations of the company until Jobs is fit enough to take the control again.

There has been no confirmation of the statement from either Jobs or any company spokesman.

Apple’s growth under Jobs
After co-founding Apple in 1976, Jobs left only nine years later. But he got back in 1997 to take the company to new heights by introducing first the iPod, which brought a revolution in the way people listen to music, and later, the immensely popular iPhone.

Jobs, a vegetarian, is cynical about mainstream medicine, according to a report in Fortune magazine, last year. It was also reported that he deferred cancer surgery for nine months while he followed alternative treatments to combat the deadly disease.

Considering the crucial role he has played in the growth of the company, shares of Apple fluctuate with every news concerning Jobs’ health.

“Steve continues to look forward to returning to Apple at the end of June and there is nothing further to say,” Apple spokesman Steve Dowling was quoted as saying by Bloomberg News.
