Amazon’s Latest: Kindle DX

Amazon’s latest offering, the third version of Kindle, is said to be a savior of the newspaper industry, but it offers much more than that.

Kindle DX with its 9.7 inch wide screen

Kindle, which initially stormed into the market in late 2007 and left all of us wanting for more, is now coming up with an upgrade to its second version, Kindle 2. The company unveiled the latest Kindle, Kindle DX, on Wednesday, May 6th.

Being looked upon as the savior for the troubled newspaper industry, Kindle DX packs a punch with a host of other features as well. Themoneytimes.com gives you a brief insight into the new features in Kindle DX.

New Features of Kindle DX

1. Screen Size: Amazon has increased the screen size of Kindle DX from the 6 inch offered in Kindle 2 to a much desirable 9.7 inch. This is the stand-out feature of the new Kindle DX and why not, size does matter a lot for an e-book reader.

2. Comprehensive Coverage of Newspapers and Magazines: The new Kindle is expected to check the losses that the newspaper industry is incurring. It is believed that the idea of a bigger screen size was to meet the needs of newspapers and magazines.

With the new Kindle offering almost 4 inches more than Kindle 2, it provides space for some advertisements to be placed, adding to the profits of newspapers and magazines. It is also rumored that the current price of $13.99 for magazine and newspaper subscription could drop down to $9.99 on the new device.

3. Bonding with Universities:
The one thing that seems to have gone unnoticed is the fact that Kindle DX is optimized for textbooks as well. Amazon has kicked off a “pilot project”, wherein 6 universities are joining hands with the new e-book reader.

Pace University, Reed College, Case Western Reserve University, Arizona State University, Princeton University, and the Darden School at the University of Virginia are supporting the digital reading format presented by the new Kindle DX.

4. Bonus Features: Kindle DX comes loaded with the PDF reader and other software that would help you create annotations within the text and notes. It also comes with a faster and a fully functional web browser that was much needed.
