The new server was much anticipated because consumers were on the hunt for a faster processor with more hard disk space that could run a home-based or a small-sized business. Other features, such as compatibility with other systems such as Mac and energy efficiency, were also much desired.
On the Upside: The LX195 fulfills almost all of consumers’ expectations. The new server boasts of four USB 2.0 ports for extra storage besides 640GB of in-built capacity. It also has 1GB Ethernet port, a 1.6 GHz of Intel’s Atom Processor with 1GB of DDR2 RAM.
The change in the processors ensures less energy consumption from the previous AMD Sempron and also makes the server’s speed faster.
The LX195 is much more compact in design, being just 3.9 inches tall, 8 inches thick and 8.2 inches wide. This server will be of a great relief for Mac users as it supports Apple’s Time Machine.
HP’s LX195 boasts of many other features as well, such as file-sharing, media streaming options, password protection, remote access, file-sharing, backup. Plus, the server is powered by Windows Home Server.
The Downsides: But this sleek server also has its downside. The LX195 does not have an eSATA port that the previous model ex475 boasted. Also, the in-built capacity of 640GB hard disk space is too low, but thankfully, it does come with an upgrade option of up-to 2TB, which would be at the buyer’s expense. This is obviously a step-down from the hot-swap capability of up-to four hard drives that the previous model ex475 supported.
With the price smartly placed at $399, HP’s new MediaSmart Home Server is expected to get mixed responses. The server should be available in stores the day following its launch, that is, by May 6.
