Below are the 5 easy steps to prevent one's system from falling prey to hackers:
1. Use a Firewall: Firewall is an extremely useful tool that helps keep your network safe from viruses and hackers by acting as a barrier. Firewall scans the traffic that enters the network and permits only authorized sites to get through.
2. Install Anti-Virus Software: All computers under a server or network should use the most updated version of antivirus software. The ideal thing to do would be to check for viruses and hacking threats on the entire system from time to time. Employees should be informed about avoiding any links, advertisements, banners or e-mail attachments from unknown sources.
3. Build a Sound Security Policy: Develop an exclusive security policy for your company which specifies the practices to keep the network secured. Hacking a password is the easiest thing to do which creates all the problems. So, educate your employees to select an alpha-numeric password of at least 8 characters or more.
Make sure all the passwords are reset every 2-3 months. The HR unit should also be on their toes to make sure that the User ID’s and passwords of the outgoing employees are deleted from the system completely.
4. Disable Unnecessary Services: While working on the systems, we come across many software that are not frequently used. Disable them immediately. They pose a larger security threat, for the simple reason that applications or services which are not in frequent use would not be updated periodically and hence, they become easy prey to viruses and hackers.
5. Perform a Susceptibility Test: After taking all the proactive steps, call up a software consulting firm and have their experts perform a check on your systems. This would expose any flaws that your system might still be facing. The experts can then recommend suggestions for fixing the flaws.
Bonus Tip: Be informed about the current information and developments in network security.
