Prejean, a Christian college student, will appear in a television ad campaign funded by the National Organization for Marriage, an organization committed to opposing homosexual marriage
New York, May 1: Miss California USA Carrie Prejean, who recently stirred up controversy while answering question about same-sex marriage unfavorably, has decided to fight against gay marriage and joined in a television ad campaign to protect what she described as 'opposite marriage' (that between a man and a woman).
A national controversy was erupted late last month when first runner-up of Miss USA pageant, Carrie Prejean expressed an unfavorable opinion in response to a question from openly gay judge Perez Hilton, the celebrity blogger.
During the finale of the Miss USA pageant held at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Sunday, April 19, 2009, Hilton asked Prejean about her opinion on legalizing same-sex marriage, and she acknowledged her opposition to homosexual marriages, predictably upsetting Hilton as well as some of those in the audience.
Prejan's controversial remarks about gay marriages earned a mixed reaction from the live audience, and she ultimately lost the Miss USA crown to Miss North Carolina, Kristen Dalton.
Prejan, the statuesque San Diego blond, later said she is not regretful about her gay marriage opinion, and she still stands firm in support of her opinion.
The 21-year-old Miss California announced Thursday she will star in a $1.5 billion anti-gay marriage ad campaign initiated by National Organization for Marriage (NOM), an organization committed to opposing homosexual marriages. This has upset gay-marriage supporters, including Keith Lewis, an executive director for Miss California USA/Teen USA competition and Perez Hilton.
"I encourage people to stand up for what they believe in and not be afraid," Prejean said Thursday at the National Press Club in Washington.
"This is not about me. It's about the future of marriage," she said of her battle to protect traditional marriages. "It's about my children and my children's children. It's about me standing up for something I'm extremely passionate about."
The new ad, “No Offense”, which NOM launched Thursday, features Prejean giving highly publicized response to Hilton’s controversial question about same-sex marriage by saying she opposed it. The ad also features the “dumb b*****” response of openly gay celebrity blogger Perez Hilton.
Prejean appeared in NBC’s “Today” show on Thursday morning and told the show host Matt Lauer that she has no regrets about her statement against gay marriage during the Miss USA 2009 pageant.
"I was attacked for giving my own opinion on stage at a Miss USA contest, and I'm going to do whatever it takes, Matt, to protect marriage," Prejean told the show host.
