Chicago, February 10: Nissan took the wraps off its boxy-shaped small car dubbed 'Krom' at the Chicago Auto Show, marking the beginning of the wagon’s world career.
The new Cube will be available in America from spring 2009, and in Europe and other global markets from fall in the same year. The Cube will be offered in a total of four flavors (basic, S, SL and Krom) all equipped with a 122-horsepower 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine that's hooked up to a 6 speed manual gear box or a new continuously variable transmission (CVT). Nissan says the fuel economy is projected to be over30 mpg on the highway.
Standard equipment on all models will include power windows with driver's side one-touch auto down feature. A remote keyless entry system, power door locks with auto-locking feature, variable intermittent windshield wipers and intermittent rear window wiper. It will also have a 12-volt power outlet and adjustable front seat belt upper anchors.
The exterior features of the Cube include a three-bar chrome grille, a two-bar front bumper insert, integrated front and rear fascias, side sills, a special rear spoiler and specific 16-inch aluminum wheels. It also comes with a special rear emblem.
Other technology features include Nissan's Intelligent Key with Push Button Ignition, Bluetooth Hands-free Phone System, Rockford Fosgate subwoofer with six speakers, XM Satellite Radio, Interface System for iPod and a rear sonar system. It shall also have an automatic temperature control and a "nifty" interior illumination system.
Furthermore, Nissan will also offer a full range of dealer accessories such as an illumination kit with 20 selectable colors, illuminated kick plates, rear cargo organizer, pet blankets, wheels, aero kits and much more.
The Cube's interior is offered in two color environments, Wall Gray and Graphite. The buyers will be able to choose among eight exterior colors. These include Chrome Silver, Steel Grey, Bitter Chocolate, Scarlet Red, Caribbean Blue, Moss Green, Super Black and White Pearl.
The 2009 Cube Krom will launch along with the rest of the Cube range in May, but pricing hasn't been released. However, Nissan has said that base Cube models will start at $13,990 plus destination costs.In addition Nissan is introducing a Cube reservation program at the Chicago auto show that lets customers research and reserve a Cube.
Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division declared "Enthusiasm is building for cube – it's unique, it's fun, it's functional, and it makes being "square" hip again.
