New York, December 2: After earning big discounts and astonishing deals on the Black Friday, United States shoppers were greeted yesterday by the Cyber Monday to grab their chunk of even better deals for their holiday shopping, though on the web this time.

Cyber Monday that follows the Black Friday weekend marks the beginning of online holiday shopping season. This Cyber Monday introduced the biggest online retail industry so far. The industry has emerged more aggressively this time as more and more retailers are looking up to online selling.

The National Retail Federation said that more than 80 percent of retailers are going for online special promotions this time. The figure is considerably up from last year.

The web retailers, like their in-store counterparts, have offered surprising deals to lure those huge numbers of shoppers who are running their fingers feverishly to click at their ideal deal. With prices slashed and irresistible free gifts displayed, the Cyber Monday has it all to raise the graph of online sales.

The web shopping saw huge traffic reeling towards certain special deals like Kmart.com’s 25 percent off watches, KBtoys.com’s 60 percent off toys and games and no shipping charges on orders from Sears.com.

Andrew Lipsman, senior analyst at comScore Inc., which tracks online spending, says Cyber Monday is just the beginning; the busiest day of the online shopping season is yet to come in mid-December.

According to other analysts, though the online and store sales figures swelled from last year, they are not going to make much difference for the industry, as the deals made were hardly profitable. Analysts still believe that this is going to be the most disastrous holiday season in two decades.

However, the Cyber Monday has given a kick-start to the online shopping season and online retailers are making every effort to boost their sales offering all sorts of promotional schemes.

The term ‘Cyber Monday’ was coined in 2004 when a research found that 77 percent of online retailers reported a significant increase in sales on the Monday after Thanksgiving.
