Prostate Cancer Screening Under Suspicion

A team of experts suggests that there is no need for all men to undergo prostate cancer screening, especially men older than 74. In fact the experts have cautioned young men against threats and risks of prostate screening test.

Besides lung cancer, Prostate cancer is also one of the biggest enemies of men. Screening tests does not improve health or prolong life rather pose a potential risk for patient to indulge in unwanted medication or treatment.

According to the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, as a matter of fact between the age of 70-75 men can draw little benefit from the screening test. This is due to the factors such as a shorter life expectancy and higher rates of false-positive results.

Prostate cancer screening, if conducted time and again diagnoses milder forms of tumors which usually do not require any treatment but the awareness about the tumor may upset and urge the patient to go for some or the other treatment to cut down on the risk of developing severe tumors.

It’s still an issue of controversy if older men fall at a greater vulnerability to subject themselves to redundant treatments, when they go in for the screening test.

Few certainly choose to undergo the screening test to ward off the possibility of developing prostate cancer later in life and there are few who totally disregard this method of screening and believe it does not help in any way.

Earlier studies also project that African-Americans are at a greater risk of developing prostate cancer.

Medical organizations advocate that a patient should consult his doctor to analyze advantages and disadvantages of the screening test.
