Cancer Reports remain obscure; Paul Newman says he’s doing nicely

Conflicting reports on the health status of actor Paul Newman have raised concern among his fans. However, none of them could be confirmed and reports claiming that Newman was terminally ill with lung cancer were labeled as ‘not true’ by his agent.

The controversy was augmented after the Associated Press quoted Oscar-winning actor A.E. Hotchner as saying that Newman has a "form of cancer, and he's dealing with it." but within hours, Hotchner came out to declare that he was misquoted. "I have no knowledge of any diagnosis or doctors...The AP misquoted me. I have no knowledge of Mr. Newman being treated for any illness," he said.

Newman's spokesman -- Jeff Sanderson -- also released a statement: "He says he's doing nicely, and this is the statement I wanted to share with you, and that's what I have. I spoke to his office [in Connecticut]. This is the statement that came directly from him."

According to abundant hearsay, the screen legend has been undergoing outpatient treatment for lung cancer at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan. But a spokeswoman for the medical facility denied having nay information about Newman.

Earlier this week, the National Enquirer shed all prudence and decided to put the terrible news out there for the rest of us to ponder in panic: Paul Newman, once a chain smoker, is dying and its lung cancer. "We have known he is seriously ill for some weeks but his loved ones are being very protective and saying very little," the magazine asserted.

Newman, 83, is not in the best of health and that has been known to a fairly wide circle of friends for some time. He acknowledged in May last year that he was at least slowing down when, in a television interview with ABC, he revealed he was giving up acting for good. "You start to lose your memory, you start to lose your confidence, you start to lose your invention ... I think that's pretty much a closed book for me."
