Archaeologists Try To Unravel Mystery Surrounding Stonehenge

With the excavation underway at one of the wonders of world, the archaeologists have given various theories as to what might be the purpose of this site. This excavation is being carried out with the backing of BBC.

Stonehenge has befuddled many with its unique construction and the purpose for which it was used. With the help BBC various archaeologists are trying to solve this mystery. Various theories are being given by scientists regarding its usage.

According to one of the theories Stonehenge was used as a place for healing. The scientists are of the viewpoint that the place had healing powers even before the Stonehenge was constructed. The stones were erected afterwards. These erected stones are known as the bluestones.

A different set of scientist have given another theory. According to them the Stonehenge was a cremation place. This team has performed carbon dating tests on few samples. One of them was cremated in between 3020-2880 B.C. roughly the time when this monument was cut into Salisbury plain. Another body is of 25 year old woman; which has been found to be cremated 2540-2370 B.C., around the time the first blue stones appeared. According to researchers a total of approximately 240 cremations were done at Stonehenge.

The scientists have also found one more thing. They have unearthed a colony of houses about 3.2 km from the Stonehenge. They have found nearly 300 houses in there, out which 10 have been excavated. According to scientists twice the given number could have existed at that time. Even if we assume four persons per house, then also the total population will cross 2000.

Another fact which has been noticed by the scientists is that, all the houses are not same. This points out towards the existence hierarchical living even at that point of time.

Also the scientists unearthed a pair of antlers in one of the ditches. Each of such antlers required 2 persons to lift it. Also another pair will be required to lift the rubble. Using these facts scientists found that at least 200 people were working on a single ditch. If all 22 ditches are taken into account then workforce would exceed thousand.

Accordingly many other facts such as the usage of copper axe have also come to fore. This copper axe tells us that the usage of copper metal had begun by that time. Thereby with the help of such excavations archaeologists have slowly but surely unearthed a part of the secrets which surround the Stonehenge.
