iPhone Catapults Apple to No.1 in Mobile Phone Space

It is official now; Apple is the most innovative player in the cell phone market today. True to predictions, Apple’s iPhone has blown away all expectations, clinching the top spot as the numero uno smartphone around.

This new positioning is based on mobile phone sales in the U.S. during July 2007, data that has been compiled by iSuppli. During the month of July, the iPhone became the highest selling smartphone in the country, claiming 1.8 percent of all mobile phone sales for the period.

iSuppli says even without historical data to do a comparative study with sales data for previous months, it seems clear that iPhone was far ahead of its competition, be it in terms of initial penetration or actual sales. Both versions of the iPhone – the 4GB as well as the 8GB – have been doing superbly in the market.

It has outsold all other contemporary phones – the Blackberry, Palm, or any smartphone from Samsung and even Nokia. Outselling Nokia is probably the icing on the cake, considering Nokia’s selling power. The number of iPods Apple sells in a full year is less than what Nokia sells in a single quarter.

The term saturation has become relative when you talk of the cell phone market today. Innovation is a constant here, and every day sees the launch of newer phones with better features and plenty of innovations.

If in the earlier days the phone was meant for voice communication, today that is just one of the basic functions of a cell phone. New phones have a range of innovations – cameras with high resolution, huge amounts of internal memory, 3.5G or EVDO connectivity, GPS mapping, push e-mail, MP3 and video playback capabilities, to name a few.

While the iPhone may not have some of these impressive list of features, it has still managed to corner the No.1 slot in its sector. And all this, during just its first official month in the market.
