Alec Baldwin regrets for 'voicemail tirade'

<p>Actor Alec Baldwin issued an apology on his Web site Friday for saying angry words to his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a " title="Alec Baldwin regrets for 'voicemail tirade'" />

Actor Alec Baldwin issued an apology on his Web site Friday for saying angry words to his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a "rude, thoughtless little pig". In an online message, the Oscar-nominated star of ‘The Departed’ apologized to fans for his angry telephone message that was broadcast around the world.

Explaining himself yesterday on his Web site, the 49-year-old actor said, "Although I have been told by numerous people not to worry too much, as all parents lose their patience with their kids, I am most saddened that this was released to the media because of what it does to a child."

In the furious voicemail message published Thursday by the celebrity news site TMZ.com, the American actor can be heard branding Ireland "a rude, thoughtless little pig."

"I'm sorry, as everyone who knows me is aware, for losing my temper with my child. I have been driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years now. You have to go through this to understand. (Although I hope you never do.) I am sorry for what happened. But I am equally sorry that a court order was violated, which had deliberately been put under seal in this case,” he further wrote.

Besides posting the apology on the site, Baldwin said he had apologized to his daughter for his actions, suggesting that the stress of legal battles with his ex-wife, Kim Basinger, had tipped him over the edge.

Baldwin and Basinger have been engaged in bitter custody disputes over their daughter, Ireland, since the couple divorced in 2002.

Baldwin's tirade was apparently fueled by Ireland's failure to switch her mobile phone on for a scheduled call with her father. "Once again I've made an ass out of myself trying to get to a phone at a specific time," Baldwin says in the message adding that "I'm tired of playing this game with you. You have insulted me for the last time.”

"You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being - I don't give a damn that you are 12 or 11 or a child or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn't care what you do," angered Baldwin said further telling his daughter that he is going to fly to Los Angeles to "straighten" her out.

In an earlier statement, Baldwin's spokesman said Basinger and her lawyer leaked the tape in violation of a court order, and that Baldwin regretted the choice of language used.

Meanwhile, Baldwin's attorney, Vicki Greene, said she filed a motion Friday to find out how the tape got leaked and to determine whether actions should be taken against star’s divorced wife, or her attorneys, or Harvey Levin, who runs TMZ.com, and anybody else associated with the leaking of the tape and the infringement of the court orders to keep the proceedings closed.

Born on April 3, 1958 in Massapequa, Long Island, Alec is the eldest of his brothers, Daniel, William, and Stephen Baldwin, all of whom are actors in film and television. In 1980, he worked in the daytime TV series "The Doctors" on NBC and, subsequently, has worked in nearly every venue as a professional actor ever since.

On Broadway, Baldwin recently appeared in The Roundabout Theatre Company's 2006 revival of Joe Orton’s “Entertaining Mr. Sloane” directed by Scott Ellis.

The Academy Award-nominated Alec was also nominated for a “Tony Award” for his performance in the 1992 revival of Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire". He was nominated for an “Emmy Award” and a “Golden Globe Award” for the television movie of that same production.

Alec won an “Obie Award” for the 1991 off-Broadway production of Craig Lucas' "Prelude to a Kiss" and bagged a “Theatre World Award” in 1986 for his turn in Joe Orton's "Loot" on Broadway.

Alec’s marriage to an Academy Award-winning American film actress and former fashion model, Basinger came to end in 2000. The relationship of Baldwin and Basinger, once regarded as one of Hollywood's golden couples, has since degenerated into a series of lawsuits and custody battles, with bitter personal attacks on both sides.

The blonde star was charged with contempt of court last year for violating a 2004 custody arrangement.

Money and Fame can obscure the truth

Alec Baldwin has the resources he needs to have evidence of his abusive nature supressed by the court system. His profession as an actor enables him to obscure his true abusive nature. He is skilled at drawing his audience in and influencing their opinion of him as he did during his interview with Rosie O'Donnell. He portrays himself as the victim. He is not. The hurtful, stinging words Alec Baldwin used to attack his daughter is verbal abuse. It probably wasn't the first time and I suspect his actions are the same towards his ex wife Kim. This explains why Ireland refuses to answer her father's scheduled phone calls. I feel for them. As a child I was verbally and physically abused by my father. There is no excuse for Alec Baldwin's behavior. Who ever leaked Alec Baldwin's malicious voicemail message towards his daughter Ireland did the right thing. The truth will always reveal itself. Children should be protected. No adult, especially a parent should ever belittle a child.

Baldwin vs. Bassinger

Action For Justice (AFJ)
If Kim didn't leak it then who did? This is a violation of privacy and KIM is continuating her tactics of alienating that child. We think custody should be granted to Alec immediately. This will turn the tables and make this a fair non discriminatory divorce. Women get custody 99% of the time. That is discrimination based on sex and UNCONSTITUTIONAL. Alec should join the Action For Justice movement.

Carmine sounds like a paid Baldwin blogger.

Baldwin had NO IDEA why his daughter didn't or couldnt answer. Maybe she had a legit excuse, like a dead battery, forgot to take the phone with, temporarily away from phone, etc.

Or maybe Baldwin abuses her like this all the time and she just wants to avoid him. Who could blame her?

Doesnt Baldwin have a reputation of abusive and violent behavior with his ex-wife, co-workers, and the pavarazzi?

I think its time to put Baldwin on the "no watch" list. I am sick of the movies that are coming out these days anyway.

I hold both of the parents

I hold both of the parents responsible for the mental damage they have done to their daughter. It's a shame what adult will do to get back at one another thru a child. Now the child is no angel either with her behavior but in comparision with the "adults" who should have known better I will hold both the parents equally responsible.

On Angry Daddies..

I endured the same verbal abuse from my Father that Ireland Baldwin experienced in one day.

The difference is I experienced it privately, consistently, and in a non-public way over years and years and years.

Eventually, and after damage done to me, countless hospital stays for depression, and years of medicated days, I was able, only by faith and God's grace, to forgive my Dad, and realize that he was the -truly-troubled one.

Once again, through God's grace, I met a man who is loving and kind, and wouldn't abuse or hurt me for the world.

There are some women who aren't so blessed.

It would be nice to have the Baldwin's money.

That's a thing we don't have..

But I wouldn't trade it for the world, for how far I've come, despite a well-meaning, but temperamental, angry Dad.

Releasing Tape was like Dropping Nuke on Daughter

Ireland could have gotten over her Dad's private tirade, but she'll never, ever have any chance of mental recovery from the complete Public Annihilation her Mom has now inflicted on her. I've had arguments with Loved ones that degenerated into namecalling, but we got over it; but then again we don't publish each other's weak-moment comments for the world to digest. If I were Ireland I would now want to crawl in a hole and stay there for a few years. Bassinger belongs in jail or an insane asylum for damaging her daughter so permanently and before the whole world. Who could get over their mother doing that to them before the world. It should have stayed private and been handled privately. She could have used the tapes in court without damaging her daughter in this manner. Basinger set a new worldwide standard for selfishness here. JR

The daughter is probably a

The daughter is probably a jerk. She's the child of an uber famous married couple and she's probably rich like crazy. If she doesn't want to talk to her father, she shouldn't have to. But if he arranges to talk to her and she does something as disrespectful to her father as turn off her phone, she should be yelled at.

Father / daughter

I can speak from experience, I know what its like trying to father two daughters from a distance with at time's a hostile mother and what inevitably happens under these circumstances. Its not easy and can be very upsetting but you NEVER EVER take it out on your child who is caught in the middle of YOUR marital situation or speak badly of the other parent in front of the child. Children are very perceptive and they see who is doing what. Baldwin and his wife need lessons in parenting and also need to get on the same page for the sake of their daughter who they are so far failing miserably. Kim Basinger is no angel in this either but his tirade is inexcuseable and unfortunately for his daughter will be one of those things in life that she'll remember all the days of her
life. Especially in a father daughter situation where a daughter will naturally seek out a male partner based on the relationship she has had with her father. Alec Baldwin should not be allowed to father any more children, we already have enough screwed up kids in the world . He should stick to the only thing he's somewhat good at, acting. Maybe he can fake it and try to at least "act" like a good father. I never liked his persona so this doesn't surprise me in the least that he's a hot headed, egocentric, narcisistic jerk who has no business being a father figure.

Baldwin's tirade was

Baldwin's tirade was apparently fueled by Ireland's failure to switch her mobile phone on for a scheduled call with her father.
hmmm...it seems to me, a child with a loving relationship with her dear daddy, wouldn't forget to switch on her phone.
A selfish, self absorbed man said to an 11 or 12 year old (dad's not sure of her exact age in the heat of the temper tantrum):
"I have been told by numerous people not to worry too much. . ." - (ME, ME, ME)
Once again I'VE made an ass out of MYSELF trying to get to a phone at a specific time," (you've inconvenienced ME, paraphrased as: how dare you 'stand up' THE Alec Baldwin - ME, ME, ME)
"I'M tired of playing this game with you. You have insulted ME for the last time.” (ME, ME, ME)
"You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being - I (ME, ME, ME) don't give a damn that you are 12 or 11 or a child or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass (if he's concerned about manipulation of a child, than perhaps he should have hesitated before telling that child the woman who gave birth to her is a "thoughtless pain in the ass"?) who doesn't care what you do," (he blames the mother for not Forcing the child to speak with him - if this child and he had a loving, respectful relationship, heaven and earth wouldn't/couldn't have kept her from keeping her "phone date" with dad, and this is not the first time she's avoided dad, judging from his earlier statements; "I'M tired of playing this game with you. You have insulted ME for the last time.” (ME, ME, ME)
angered Baldwin said further telling his daughter that he is going to fly to Los Angeles to "straighten" her out. (Threatening!!!)

Alec Baldwin, like Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise and other celebrites in the past year is embarrassed because the public caught a glimpse of his true nature - the one he so carefully hides from the public behind a carefully construed mask. He's only concerned about one thing. Damage control. How dare we stop him from earning a paycheque once we realize that he compares females who don't please him to an obese, mud rutting farm animal. Think of your own parents. Can you imagine your own parent(s) calling you a "rude, thoughtless little pig" because you'd disappointed them? Is this his idea of parental discipline? Should do wonders for her self-esteem - that, and dad not actually knowing her age. *roll's eye's*

Consider this Alec Baldwin quote:"If we were living in another country, what we, all of us together, would go down to Washington and stone Henry Hyde to death, stone him to death, stone him to death!" said Baldwin. "Then we would go to their house and we'd kill the family, kill the children."

I suspect Kim Basinger is not playing typical 'custody battle games' - she is vigilently and thanklessly trying to protect her young from a verbally and physically chauvanistic abusive alcoholic. And, Alec Baldwin may be ACTING livid about his voicemail being made public, and it's potential effect on the child, but he's pretty hypocritical for someone who's reportedly writing a tell-all book about her mother. Alec Baldwin

Alec's act is shameful and Carmine's comments are alarmingly off-base. Only the public release of the tape harms the child? Clearly you have no clue. The harm was done by the message itself. The making it public has likely only helped the child recover, with overwhelming public sympathy making it plainly evident that the father was in the wrong. It is all too easy for a child otherwise to internalize the abuse, assume the parent is right, and that the child is "a pig", whatever. And no one can speak to violation of court order, unless it was in place addressing these kinds of communications, well in advance of their being made. How does anyone know that the child didn't go to a friend also, and say, check out what my father said. The child might rightfully be in rebellion against such an abusive father. I don't care what right Alec may have had to be angry. Save for the abusive language, his message would have been ok and understandable.

We all kn ow he has a crazy temper and it now seems that his daughter is not safe from it either. Personally these two should have never pro-created in the first place. Ugggh spare me the hollywood bs.

pullease.... he is no victim

How can you trivialize such verbal abuse of an 11 year old child as a "momentary lapse of judgement" ? Many parents have gone through hostile custody and divorce litigation, and they didn't need to berate the child.
He called her a "pig". What kind of father calls his daughter a pig? The real truth is that all we can hope for is for this child to grow up really, really fast so that neither of these prima donnas get the chance to ruin her any further.

I thought that we as a society have already determined many years ago that using children as pawns and puppets for the sake of a broken marriage was a bad, bad thing. Did this news not make it to the ears of Celebrities?

Shameful behaviour , and his lame excuses of blaming everyone else for his verbal abuse make him look like even less of a man. There are good men out there fighting for their rights to be with their children... do not lump him into that category.

Kim and Alec are as immature as they come and at their age ...they both should be truly embarrassed...

Alec Baldwin

The father should now gain primary custody based on the premeditated actions of the mother. Any parent who has experienced the systematic parental alienation that Baldwin has can easily understand Baldwin's momentary lapse of judgment on an answering machine. The true crime, and it is a crime, was committed by the parent who made this recording public with clear willful intent to harm her own child in order to harm her ex-husband. That kind of cruelty is not understandable. Basinger's behavior is legally actionable. It was intentional child abuse for Basinger to release Baldwin's confidential remarks to the press, fully aware, and intending to damage both her daughter and her ex-husband. Her malicious desire for revenge was unlikely satisfied, despite the pain her leak caused her daughter. No sane court would allow such a parent primary custody of her daughter. Basinger wants a weapon not a child, and her unconscionable actions with this recording demonstrate she is entirely willing to use her daughter as a weapon over and over again. It is both illegal and immoral to use one's one children, as Basinger has, as the mere means to punish the other parent.

Having endured the same

Having endured the same problems that Mr.Baldwin has endured with 4 children I can understand the frustration. His choice of words was poor his frustration is real. And I do mean real. Women have been most likely to cause parental aleniation but men are just as often to participate in the act of destroying the relation of non costodial parents who want to love their children but the hatred of the other parent will not allow this.
