Actor Alec Baldwin issued an apology on his Web site Friday for saying angry words to his 11-year-old daughter, Ireland, calling her a "rude, thoughtless little pig". In an online message, the Oscar-nominated star of ‘The Departed’ apologized to fans for his angry telephone message that was broadcast around the world.
Explaining himself yesterday on his Web site, the 49-year-old actor said, "Although I have been told by numerous people not to worry too much, as all parents lose their patience with their kids, I am most saddened that this was released to the media because of what it does to a child."
In the furious voicemail message published Thursday by the celebrity news site TMZ.com, the American actor can be heard branding Ireland "a rude, thoughtless little pig."
"I'm sorry, as everyone who knows me is aware, for losing my temper with my child. I have been driven to the edge by parental alienation for many years now. You have to go through this to understand. (Although I hope you never do.) I am sorry for what happened. But I am equally sorry that a court order was violated, which had deliberately been put under seal in this case,” he further wrote.
Besides posting the apology on the site, Baldwin said he had apologized to his daughter for his actions, suggesting that the stress of legal battles with his ex-wife, Kim Basinger, had tipped him over the edge.
Baldwin and Basinger have been engaged in bitter custody disputes over their daughter, Ireland, since the couple divorced in 2002.
Baldwin's tirade was apparently fueled by Ireland's failure to switch her mobile phone on for a scheduled call with her father. "Once again I've made an ass out of myself trying to get to a phone at a specific time," Baldwin says in the message adding that "I'm tired of playing this game with you. You have insulted me for the last time.”
"You don't have the brains or the decency as a human being - I don't give a damn that you are 12 or 11 or a child or that your mother is a thoughtless pain in the ass who doesn't care what you do," angered Baldwin said further telling his daughter that he is going to fly to Los Angeles to "straighten" her out.
In an earlier statement, Baldwin's spokesman said Basinger and her lawyer leaked the tape in violation of a court order, and that Baldwin regretted the choice of language used.
Meanwhile, Baldwin's attorney, Vicki Greene, said she filed a motion Friday to find out how the tape got leaked and to determine whether actions should be taken against star’s divorced wife, or her attorneys, or Harvey Levin, who runs TMZ.com, and anybody else associated with the leaking of the tape and the infringement of the court orders to keep the proceedings closed.
Born on April 3, 1958 in Massapequa, Long Island, Alec is the eldest of his brothers, Daniel, William, and Stephen Baldwin, all of whom are actors in film and television. In 1980, he worked in the daytime TV series "The Doctors" on NBC and, subsequently, has worked in nearly every venue as a professional actor ever since.
On Broadway, Baldwin recently appeared in The Roundabout Theatre Company's 2006 revival of Joe Orton’s “Entertaining Mr. Sloane” directed by Scott Ellis.
The Academy Award-nominated Alec was also nominated for a “Tony Award” for his performance in the 1992 revival of Tennessee Williams' "A Streetcar Named Desire". He was nominated for an “Emmy Award” and a “Golden Globe Award” for the television movie of that same production.
Alec won an “Obie Award” for the 1991 off-Broadway production of Craig Lucas' "Prelude to a Kiss" and bagged a “Theatre World Award” in 1986 for his turn in Joe Orton's "Loot" on Broadway.
Alec’s marriage to an Academy Award-winning American film actress and former fashion model, Basinger came to end in 2000. The relationship of Baldwin and Basinger, once regarded as one of Hollywood's golden couples, has since degenerated into a series of lawsuits and custody battles, with bitter personal attacks on both sides.
The blonde star was charged with contempt of court last year for violating a 2004 custody arrangement.
Alec Baldwin has the resources he needs to have evidence of his abusive nature supressed by the court system. His profession as an actor enables him to obscure his true abusive nature. He is skilled at drawing his audience in and influencing their opinion of him as he did during his interview with Rosie O'Donnell. He portrays himself as the victim. He is not. The hurtful, stinging words Alec Baldwin used to attack his daughter is verbal abuse. It probably wasn't the first time and I suspect his actions are the same towards his ex wife Kim. This explains why Ireland refuses to answer her father's scheduled phone calls. I feel for them. As a child I was verbally and physically abused by my father. There is no excuse for Alec Baldwin's behavior. Who ever leaked Alec Baldwin's malicious voicemail message towards his daughter Ireland did the right thing. The truth will always reveal itself. Children should be protected. No adult, especially a parent should ever belittle a child.
